Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Bunny with a broken leg

Hi all,

My boy, Leroy, has broken one of his front legs. Not sure how. We have seen a vet at pets at home today who has quoted £700 for an amputation or £900+ for it to be pinned. He is bandaged at the mo and on painkillers. We’re considering the amputation but didn’t know if this was expensive. Does anyone know of any cheaper vets in the Warwick area?

Thanks!

It's been a few years since I was in this position, but the amputation seems to be very expensive. The pinning cost is probably quite reasonable. My rabbit ended up with a front leg amputation after several failed attempts to keep it in a cast. Pinning wasn't a viable option for us.

Do you have a rabbit (or maybe ortho) specialist in the area? It may be worth asking for a referral. They are not always more expensive, and should have a lot more experience.

Sending lots of vibes for Leroy, I’ve not been in this position recently, not since the mid 80s so I can’t really advise, but I agree with Shimmer’s suggestion to find a specialist in the area, you could alter the title of your post to ask for advise on a specialist in your area if you need help.
