  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

overnight at the vets

Young Bun
My mini lop needs to stay at the vets overnight so they can monitor him and they asked me if I wanted to leave my other rabbit in as well.

My initial thought was no, as they quite often spend half the day in different rooms, by their own choice. And my other one hates the vets.

But now i'm thinking my little guy might feel better with a bit of company since he wont be used to being in a small space.

Does anyone have any recommendations as what may be best for the two of them?

I think its nicer for the patient to have his pal there & it could help him with recovery. For your healthy bun a "hands off" visit to the vet might teach him that vets aren't all that bad. I hope he improves soon

That's what i was thinking, I'm also slightly concerned that even though they aren't together 24/7, one may smell different after being at the vets and it may effect their bond.

I don't want to risk that as they have been perfect with each other. I have never seen a single fight or display of dominance. They really have been living together as equals for nearly a year now.

I have to admit I don't always take all of mine but I have three, they are really heavy and I have to use public transport sometimes. The bunny that goes to the vet a lot is super sociable, my other two I'd make more of an effort as they are less people orientated.

I felt I needed to add this contribution to your thread as would have felt a hypocrite if I didn't

As your vet has offered, I would take the other one unless it's going to be really stressful for the other rabbit being at the vets too.

What's your little lop going into the vets for?

I don't take all of mine, but I have a bonded quad and I think it would be a bit much for the vet to cope with a whole family of buns, but I usually choose a 'companion of the day' so that the one at the vet isn't lonely :)

he jumped off of the sofa but landed so awkwardly that he fractured his jaw :(

he went in this morning to have it wired together but after consulting a specialist they ended up gluing it together. They wanted to keep him in for pain management and to syringe feed him.

I struggled to do it last night by myself as my girlfriends actually away on her hen do, so as much as I hate him being stuck at the vet, i think its better for him as they made it look so easy when they did it for me.

Thanks. I feel so horrible for him. He saw him do it and knew straight away something was wrong. I'm just hopping he will be able to eat solids again soon because he really wants to. He kept trying but could only push it around. Once we got him some pain relief he actually seemed his usual cheery self.

The vets had originally said that once they wired the jaw he should be fine to eat solids after 24 hours as it was only due to the pain caused from the movement of the jaw that he couldn't So fingers crossed it's the same with the glue.

At least if the glue works, he wont need to go back in a month to have another surgery like he would of needed to remove the wire.

Oh dear, poor lad :(

Absolutely the best place for him is at the vet :thumb:

You don't want to go doing stuff that they have years of experience doing, it would stress you to the nth degree!

So they said this morning that even with the glue there was still movement, so they have wired it this morning as well.

He is already up and jumping around so they are just keeping a close eye on him now with lots of syringe feeds and pain management.

Goodness, bless him  He's certainly a fighter :)

Did you take both of them in the end?

Tomorrow or Saturday. The living room feels empty without them :p
