Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Moving head side to side

When Beans is sat still he slowly moves his head from side to side, he doesn’t seem to do this when he’s moving. We’ve only noticed it in the past few days, his partner died on Friday and he’s now alone. I will try and get a video of him doing it, it’s not head tilt, Izzy had that and this looks different

I#m sorry to hear of Izzy's passing. She had a good life with you, sweet dreams beautiful xx

With Beans I wonder if what you describe is scanning? Do his eyes kind of scan the environment horizontally? Does he have red eyes?

He doesn’t have red eyes, I’ve never noticed him do it before and I’ve had him 10 months, he’s a year old. I’ve tried to video it but I’m not sure how clear it is

I’ve looked at his eyes again and he has like a white/milky line just under halfway up his eye, it goes across both of his eyes

I'm very sorry about Izzy

The behaviour you've described does sound like scanning, but I don't know what the milky white line could be. I would post the video you've taken even if it's not very clear. Someone might be able to suggest what could be causing this.

Sending Beans lots of vibes. I hope you find that it's nothing serious.

Moving his head side to side sounds like scanning. Not sure about the white line but for some reason maybe because of my Harley developing them I'm thinking cataracts; at a year old though that could be a bit early?

I would get your Vet to take a look at Beans. The 'scanning' you describe coupled with the 'white lines' in his eyes might be indicative of EC. EC does not always present with head tilt, other neurological symptoms can also occur-eg an onset of scanning. EC can also effect the eyes, full details here
