Pair female

New Kit
We have a female outdoor rabbit aged about 4 or 5 she originally bonded with a male who died a couple of months ago. We were looking for a new male to bond her with thinking she needed a friend to be with if she was feeling lonely. Our question is do we need to? Due to her age is she better on her own rather than attempting to bond with a new mate. Or will she be lonely? Do we need to get a rabbit of similar age or will she bond with a younger rabbit? Thanks for any advice.

4 or 5 years isn't particularly old - more middle aged. Rabbits nearly always do better with another rabbit or two, especially if they are outside and don't get the same family interaction as a house rabbit would.

Assuming she has been neutered, I would suggest contacting your local rabbit rescue to arrange a few dates and find a mate that she gets on with. The partner's age shouldn't really matter, as long as they are also neutered. Un-neutered rabbits are quite hormonal and bonding can be unpredictable.

Hello there and welcome. Sorry you have lost one of your rabbits  Your remaining rabbit is still young really at 4.5, middle aged at 6-7 and then getting older 8-10+, so yes I think your rabbit would like a friend. You would ideally need a neutered Buck, maybe of the same age but not necessarily essential. You would also need a neutral space where the 2 could be introduced as female rabbits tend to be very territorial and would possibly attack a new rabbit if put into her area. Is your female spayed? Have you thought about looking at a nearby Rescue Centre where you would get a rabbit already neutered and vaccinated? Good luck with finding a suitable friend.

Thanks for the replies. That's what I was hoping. So it would be possible to have an extra pair? We do have quite a large set up outside. A large shed with a large attached run. If we do go down this route would it be better to go for a already bonded pair (male and female?) to go with our current female. Or would this be far too complicated and just go for a single male. Obviously we would visit our local rescue centre so would like to give a home to more than one if possible.

It isn't impossible to introduce an existing pair to your rabbit, but it will very likely be more difficult. You will be trying to bond 2 females and this is the problem, unless you can find 2 bonded boys. Some people send their rabbit away to be bonded so you could consider this if there is a Rescue which also does bonding.
