Hi There... i need your advice

kelly

Warren Scout
I have found this site by absolute chance while seeking help for treating rabbits with myxi.
let me tell you about my bunnies......I had a little family of 5 dwarf lop bunnie living together until one came down with myxi, my vet advised me there was no possible treatment or any chance of survival so I had him put to sleep :( . A few days later another bunny came down with the same symptoms and she too was put to sleep. :(
Now, the remainding three rabbits all have myxi too, they have had the virus for nearly two weeks. I got some great advise and leads from Tamsin which I have used while trying to treat my bunnies. The vet and I have had many disagreements because she insists that my rabbits need to be destroyed. I have been treating them for the past two weeks with 0.5 baytril orally daily and I am now syringe feeding them a puree of carrot, cabbage and pellets. Is there any other advice any of you can give me? any antibiotics? eye ointment for their poor swollen eyes? how long does it usually take before the rabbits begin to get better? Are the rabbits at the peak of their illness?
I am sorry for all the questions but I have not been offered much help elsewhere.
thank you all for reading
love kelly and her sick bunnies xxx :D

So sorry about your sick bunnies Kelly. I know you will be picked up by expert advice here soon and I keep my fingers crossed for you.

Take care

Try ringing a specialist vet - ask your vet for a referral to a rabbit specialist in your area - actually demand one!! I only have the number of the specialist in Hampshire/Berkshire area (Strathmore Veterinary Clinic - 01264 352323) if this is any use. They will usually get a vet to ring you back and answer any questions if they aren't availible to talk immediately. You could also try the RWF for specialists in your area.

When my first rabbit got ill after taking him to my local vets and no accurate diagnosis and no response to antibiotic treatment after two weeks they referred me to the vets above who were able to diagnose the problem on the first visit. As far as I am aware all vets have a book detailing specialists in the area that they should be able to look at for you!

Hi Kelly,

Welcome to the forum.

As Caz says if your vet isn't helpful then try to find one that is. If your vet can't help then the RWA Tel: 0870 046 5249 can give you a list.

When I needed a expert rabbit vet I used Guy Carter at Medivets, 237 St Albans Road, Watford, Herts WD2 5AS. Tel: 01923 243429.

That numbers from a couple of years ago so you might need to check with the yellow pages.

Anti-inflamitories might help. You can clean the eyes with saline solution which is a mix of boiled water (which has cooled) and a pinch of salt.

The course of the disease varies from rabbit to rabbit. From what I've read the most severe cases pass away within 14 days, if your rabbit makes in past the two week mark then thats a step in the right direction but its still a road to go. Your probably looking at around 6-8 weeks.

Best wishes,
Tamsin

Thank you all for your replies. I will be in touch with the recommended vets tomorrow.
once agin thank you
kelly :D

Hello Kelly and welcome to the forum

I'm very sorry to hear about your poorly bunnies, what a nightmare of a time you must be having :(
Your vet doesn't sound very helpful at all. I'd suggest finding another if possible.
Sending get well wishes to your bunsters.

Everytime i read a post like this my heart sinks,it brings back the sad times with william.
Ok if you dont know about william he was a 10 month old hulstlander bunnie a beautifull kind little boy,he caught myxi when my vet saw him (in the early stages) he told me not to put to sleep if he was still eating and drinking to try,has your rabbits been vaccinated? william was not they have less chance of getting over it if unvaccinated, william had myxi for four weeks it was in the 2-3 rd week he started to look worse but was still ok in himself, sadly four weeks to the day william gave up his little body just didnt have the strength to fight and he was pts.
The main thing is to keep your bunnieswarm, make sure they have antibiotics twice a day and antinflamitors once a day,i used to bath williams eyes with warm water twice a day.
It can take up to 6 months for a rabbit to fully recover from myxi, its not something that happens over night.
Hope ive helped a little.

hi bluebunny,
you have 2 adorable staffies :D . i have 2 staffs, molly and benson. I also have a english bullterrier called romeo but he is a very crazy mutt. Cost me over £1200 in vet bills (thank goodness for pet insurance). Oh yes clever little romeo decided it was wise to eat his rope toy. Dumb dog had surgery for its removal and then the stupid thing chewed a corner from his bed 2 wks later. Nearly lost him that time. He is fully recovered now, just has a fetish for bananas :? .
Enough about my dogs, My bunnies are still fighting myxi at the mo. It would just be lovely for them to get over this. They could then prove my vet wrong too. It is a lot of hard work and time but I am willing to give them a gp at fighting the illness.
