Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Neutering

Smudge

Hi bunny mad peeps!

We want to get our new arrival neutered but i just wanted to ask a couple of questions :)

How long will it take Bailey to recover? Also how long before we can put Bailey and Smudge together without fear of baby bunnies

Thanks

Hiya Helen

I've recently covered this topic in my local Vets Newsletter and I've also had one of my previous bunnies Dillon neutered.

Dillon was fine - the operation for males is considered to be far less invasive then for female bunsters and males normally bounce back from the operation quite quickly, normally a day or so at the most.
Our Vets normally recommend keeping bunnies separate for at least 6/8 weeks until the male becomes sterile but its worth checking with your Vet just to confirm this is the right period. Also our Vets use dissolveable stitches which was good. Might also be worth checking if the Vets use Gas to put your bunny to sleep as I understand this is a safer option but hopefully there will be some more replies on her to give you additional guideance.

Good things to watch after the operation is that Bailey returns to eating and pooing normally. I kept Dillon on nice fresh hay the evening after his operation and then a light diet for 24 hours.

Good luck with Bailey I'm sure he will be fine and in for lots of cuddles from his mum after his Neuter.

There seems to be a lot of debate I've heard anything between 3-8 weeks for safe to put with an unneutered female. We were always told 3 weeks by our vet and have had no problems. The RWA say 4 weeks. I've heard 6 weks quoted by vets a lot though.

Perhaps it depends on the reason they are quoting the time allowed?

For instance, it may take 3-4 weeks for viable sperm to perish after neutering (that's roughly the time given for other small animals such as rats), but perhaps 6 weeks before the male hormones have subsided and the buck will no longer have the urge to mate or fight another rabbit?

Just pondering, and curious to know too, as I already have a House-Hare in training ready for the day Floyd won't want to eat her or mate her!

Thanks for all the replies!

I am going to phone around a few vets tomorrow and question them on every little detail

Will let you know if i hear anything interesting
