  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Neutering too soon? Update

NixNax

Young Bun
My rabbit went in to be spayed at the end of October but no obvious structure was found so vet left it. Now I'm pretty sure testicles have developed so I want him neutered. Would February be too soon as it will only be 3.5 months after the previous operation ? He recovered really quickly from the last operation. He'll be nearly 10 months old and i want to get him a friend asap but not sure how long I should leave it between ops. What are people's views. I try to work it around school holidays so im around to keep an eye on him.

My opinion is there has been a decent gap between anaesthetics & this certainly warrants a chat & exam by your vet. If your vet agrees the time is right I'd go ahead. It'll be lovely to get him a friend

I agree, if your Bunny is fit and well and you have a Rabbit savvy Vet whom you trust then I would go ahead with the op' in February. My only reservation would be if the Vet felt that an abdominal castration would be necessary rather than the usual closed castration.

Hi there

I think it will be fine to go ahead with the operation so far as the GA is concerned. Of course discuss all this with your vet first. I can understand that you want to get him a friend :)

Agree. To me 3.5 months is a reasonable wait, but definitely talk to your vet.

Thank you. I spoke to the vet over the phone and they said the timing was fine. I took him in to be castrated on Tuesday. As they called him the mystery bunny they gave him a good examination before I left. Trixie decided to pull his testicles up so we had to wait 15 mins to see if he dropped them back down, which thankfully he did because until that point apart from saying he definitely had a willy (unlike before when it wasn't obvious) they couldn't feel his testicles very well, even though I knew I had felt them! They said he is definitely a boy bunny and whatever the poking around they did a couple of months ago has helped him to develop normally. The operation went well with no problems and recovered very quickly the next day! Thanks for all the advice everyone!
