  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Eye Problem

Hi

I am copying and paste on behalf of someone who lives abroad:

I have been searching on the web for an explanation, however none of the conditions apply to her fully. She has corneal inflammation with a small white line across of her pupil. This appeared x2 before when she ate a high starchy food such as a potato, however it went away after a few days on its own. Now, she ate something high in pure sugar and it re-appeared even worse, with a red (as if veins were burst) eye , the typical corneal inflammation and the white line across her pupil. She's been like this for 1 week and no sign of improvement. We took her to the vet in Attard, and she was prescribed antibiotic for conjunctivitis. No improvement after 5 days of eye drops (x2/ day), hence it is definitely not an infection. However, again there is no sign of improvement and the antibiotic prescribed by the vet seems to have irritated her eye even more.

From experience, I thought it might be worth asking the knowledgeable peeps on here for advice!

Hi Cara

I would have them test the rabbit for glaucoma

A corneal ulcer can present as a white line along the eye (horizontal) as when the eyeball swells the eyelid can't close any more.

http://www.disabledrabbits.com/blindness.html

The eyeball swelling may not be obvious, even to a fully qualified vet, but would need the professional tonometer equipment to determine this (not all vet practices have it). The pressure can be very high without obvious symptoms except the white line and the red - as if veins were burst.

Good luck!
