Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Baby bunny with Coccidia

New Kit
We just adopted a baby bunny to be a friend to our current 9 month old female Holland lop Piper. We went to the vet and found out that he (Theodore) is much younger than we thought (6weeks) and has Coccidia. We started him on Albon. I have read horror stories on the internet about this disease! Does anyone have any good prognosis experiences??

Sorry to read this. I think if you have caught it early the prognosis is better but I am bumping this up for you, I do hope baby recovers.

You will need to barrier nurse the baby bun to prevent it spreading to your other bun. I would also advise the place you got him from that you have a vet diagnosis of coccidia and that the rest of the litter / other animals may be affected and need prompt vet treatment.

I hope treatment goes well and he makes a good recovery. You did well to get prompt vet treatment for him.

He is doing just fine. He never showed any symptoms. She just happened to have found them during a wellness check. I am hoping we caught it in time and that he will be fine.

As he was asymptomatic it may be that the coccidia load was not great. As you probably know Coccidiosis in a 6 week old kit can be extremely serious, so the fact that your Kit has shown no symptoms could make for a better prognosis.

Some detailed information can be found on the following links, including the vital importance of regular (at least daily) removal of all soiled bedding and of the need for very very strict biosecurity :

I hope that your Kit can recover and not have any relapses once treatments stops.

Thank you! We’re going back to have him rechecked today. I think I’m going to ask if I can continue medication until he is older. She said there were not many, but of course I immediately started to panic! Thank you for all your support! I will let you know how it goes.

You are very wise!

I am glad you've got the vet across all of this. I hope all goes well x

Thanks everyone! The vet said the Coccidia were completely gone and he had gained 100 grams! I am so encouraged by this. Now to the next step which would be introducing him to my spayed 9 month old female.... any tips?

Great news :)

Personally I'd hold off the bonding for a few weeks just to be on the safe side. Good luck :)

He is just a baby so your Holland Lop might attack him. It would be advisable to wait until he is older as he needs to be more dominant for the relationship to work.
