  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

It's the 5th day of Charlies stasis episode and although we've had progress he still won't eat hay. Is this normal? When my rabbits have had stasis before it's not lasted this long.

As Charlie has known renal problems that is possibly a primary cause of his recent gi tract stasis and inappetance.

Rabbits with renal problems often go off hay and prefer fresh veg/grass/forages/herbs.

Is he receiving fluid therapy ? If his kidneys are struggling then he could benefit from daily fluid therapy, this can make the 'renal Rabbit' feel a bit better and thus their appetite may improve

Is he receiving any treatment for his Kidney problems ?

His teeth have been thoroughly checked and are good.

He's not in any treatment at the moment as it's been a struggle to get a definite diagnosis. Even with talking to specialists. His bloods have been normal in the past. Will see what the next lot brings.

I didn't know that about hay and renal problems . Is fluid therapy feeding them water through a syringe? Sorry if that's a bit daft

By 'fluid therapy' I mean fluids given parenterally (IV) or subcutaneously

There are three ways to give a rabbit fluid .. one is via the mouth. Secondly, it can be put 'under the skin' (which many owners can do, but often a vet or nurse does it). Thirdly it can be given via a vein in the ear, which is known as Intravenously. For the third method they would have to stay as an inpatient in the vet as it can take a while as it goes very slowly into the bloodstream. For the other two they can go home straight away.

I hope this helps and it's not daft at all :)

Unfortunately he's got worse and I think has given up. Going to vets tomorrow to be pts. He's just not happy and has a horrible smell that a previous rabbit had before she died. I'm devastated , can't say much more 😢
