  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

1stly coco 7yrs ongoing sneezing flares up lasts a week or two then stops (been going on for 4years atleast) Vet says its scar tissue but when shes really sneezing its thick sticky snot i pull out. Shes had antibiotics/wormed/nebuliser/steroid inhaler nothing works.
Is penicillin injections worth a shot? And ive heard of flo 10 to nebulise but cant find it.

Jack 13yrs arthritis in spine. Used to get a lot of urinary tract problems. Long term metacam bunny. Noticed hes smelly n tatty down below (cant reach bot anymore) eating moving fine just holds tail higher now (gradually gets higher every year) recently finished antibiotics incase hes got infection much better as he was peeing on floor every few mins but thats stopped now.
Heard a stronger pain killer is available? (Hes been on metacam 5/6yrs now so wondering if hes ammune now)

Any ideas on either?
Thanks

Not sure with the breathing. I've only real experience of this in ferrets. Two had serious scarring throughout the lungs which resulted in repeat infections - antibiotics anytime sneezing started.

It's possible to build up immunity to the metacam especially with how long he's been on it. Is it possible to increase his dose at all?
Has he had an xrays recently to show how the arthritis has progressed?
What pain relief has your vet suggested?

Hes on whatever i give him tbh. If bad i up it to twice a day .7 each. My vet moved so im at another and he just says woteva im doing is right and he agrees with my last vet. Due to age he doesnt want to do anything intrusive.

Sneezing again just go with what my last vets advice and when bad she gets metacam aswell for few days. vet says no other cures but when you watch her panic its not nice. She doesnt get antibiotics anymore as it stops itself after a week or so of nebuliser etc.

Nebulising is very good for Upper Respiratory Tract Infections.

I also use Bisolvon, which thins the mucous and allows it to pass more easily.

I have known bunnies be quite unresponsive to antibiotics for white snot. You could investigate the possibility of a deep nasal swab to find the antibiotic, but it's difficult for antibiotics to penetrate the area to work adequately.

I personally would never us F10, due to it's corrosiveness but I know lots of people recommend it. In the end I found alternative treatments actually worked better than antibiotics (and this was on the advice of my vet - a referral in fact)

For arthritis, I have used Tramadol in conjunction with Metacam.

Acupuncture can also be very helpful for arthritis, as can cold laser therapy, which my vet does:

Physiotherapy is helpful too and I have learned a lot from registered physios on how to deal with rabbits:
