Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Lost a nail

BeccaT

Young Bun
One of my rabbits appears to have lost a claw. It was in the middle of the lounge floor when I got home. It is about 1cm in length and has come from his front left paw. There are no obvious signs of blood, he isn't limping (although flinched when I felt it to work out where it had come from) & he is eating fine (munching hay as I write). Do I need to take him to the vets?
I've been trying to cut their nails but am a bit scared of cutting them too far so probably leave them a bit too long. They are going to the vets in a couple of weeks time for their vaccinations, so thought I'd ask for some nail clipping advice while I'm there.
(Apologies for sounding dumb, they are Rescue rabbits & I've only had them a few months so am learning)

As long as there is no continuous bleeding and the actual toe itself is not injured then it probably isn't necessary to take him to the Vet today. The nail should regrow relatively quickly. Just keep an eye on the toe for any signs of infection/inflammation :)

Becca, no way do you sound dumb!

I would bring the vaccinations forward, get the nail/claw checked out and also get the vet to clip the nails. Long nails have a habit of catching on things and causing a lot of blood and hoo-ha :)

You need to keep them short. I find shining a little torch behind the nail will show up the quick, and then I am confident of not cutting it.

Thank you both. There is no obvious damage to his toe (as much as he would let me check!) & I can't find any evidence of blood anywhere. I will try the trick with the torch to cut their nails. I just need to work out better how to hold them & cut them without getting bitten! I will get advice from the vet. Thanks xx

You're welcome :)

I have a technique with the torch to do it single handedly, but it's hard to explain.
I did demonstrate it to a vet recently, so maybe it will catch on
