Doughnut tiddling out of her litter tray

cpayne

I'm sure she hasn't got a UTI as she's very happy and runs into her litter tray to urine too, but found quite a few clear puddles around the floor for a couple of weeks. Since she's six and a half do you think she may not be able to hold on to her urine as good? I'm going to see how she goes as it's no hardship just wiping it up but will pop her to my specialist if I noticed her back legs are wet or turning yellow!

She may have a bit of arthritis in her lower spine/hips. This can make it uncomfortable to hop into a litter tray and/or to adopt the correct position to urinate (hence the urine staining).

Have you checked that the skin under the soiled fur is not sore ? Urine scald can be an issue.

If she were actually leaking wee then there are a few possible causes- eg Bladder Sludge, EC, a problem with urethral sphincter muscles.

Her fur doesn't look to be soiled that much, I can't see any urine scald. I also don't think it's arthritis as she jumps up high into her litter tray and out again and goes mad, so I think that's all OK. May be the urethral sphincter muscles. Her urine is very clear. It's also hard to tell if it's all the time or on and off as it may well dry up overnight or while I'm at work. I know she's not straining to go to the toilet and it's not always with her pills, so it's nothing to do with her digestion/slow gut problem.

Think I need to investigate further. I picked her up last week to do her nails and she's not wet. Sorry I need to get more info. Just wondered if this is the age where urethral muscles start going or if she's still young for that.

sending lots vibes that investigations go well, could well be age related, mabel started doing same at 6years x

Thanks for letting me know. She's certainly not suffering and she is still using her litter tray, sometimes she runs over really quickly as if she's desperate!

Bladder weakness can occur in spayed Does, although I have never had a Doe develop the problem. The condition can be managed by giving oestrogen replacement. But of course that comes with potential risks. I am sure Mark will be able to establish what's going on :)

Hi there and sorry to hear about Doughnut.

I had this recently. No sign of pain. Sometimes wees outside the letterbox but mostly in it ... Absolutely no urine scald and clean as a whistle.

However, a urine sample showed up bladder infection and blood in the urine (not visible)

I would exclude that before thinking of all the other possibilities such as bladder weakness etc, which is very rare

Good luck with Mark :)

Thanks everyone. I'll monitor her for a week or so and see what happens. She has tiddled on the floor when I've been there as I hear her flick her back legs in annoyance. Would her urine look a bit chalky or discoloured if she had an infection as it's very clear like water.

In that case I'd probably pop her in to see Mark this week. Is she drinking any more than usual ?

The colour of the urine, or whether it has any sediment, has absolutely no bearing on whether there is infection.

I personally would want a culture done asap, but then that's me :)

Oh right, I thought it would be similar to us.

Think I'm going to have to experiment as it's not every day and over night I'm not sure if it dries up or during the day while I'm at work it dries up. Maybe I'll put a little puddle of water down in the evening and see if it's dried up in the morning!

I don't think she's particularly drinking more. She gets through nearly a bowl of water a day. This is her bowl. Not sure if that's a lot or average. If there's a little puddle what's the best way to take it to Mark?

If the puddle is fairly clean (doesn't need to be sterile), put it into a clean jar by sucking it up through a syringe. Doesn't have to be much - even less than half a ml will work fine for a dipstick test and then off to the lab if necessary.

Mark may be able to express Doughnut's bladder, but if she has had a pee already, the bladder may be small and nothing may come out!

Good luck.

Oh and keep the sample in the fridge and try if possible to do it as close to the appointment time. So take one when it appears, and if she does another puddle then discard the first and keep the newer one to take. So it's as fresh as possible.

Hope that helps

Draw it up into a syringe and transfer it into a little bottle/pot of some sort. :)

Average water consumption is 50ml-100ml/kg/24 hours. Rabbits who eat a lot of fresh veg.herbs/grass tend to drink less than those who have a mainly dry diet. Rab

Thanks both of you. Wouldn't have thought of a syringe although I have lots!

Had a little puddle and thought she smelt a little. Picked her up and given her a clean but she has got urine stains on her tail. Backs of legs look ok but tail a little wet so off on Friday so she'll be seeing Mark. She's still happy though and doesn't seem in pain at all. Wanted a treat after being cleaned and kisses and nose rubs. Hopefully she won't be in pain before Friday as can't really take any days off this week

She just has hay and muesli. Seems she drinks 200ml some days. She hadn't drunk that much today though about 150 as quite a bit left in her bowl

I'm really glad you're getting her checked out :)

I expect Mark may suggest a blood profile aswell as urinalysis. Might save two consults if both could be done at the same time :)

I don't have anything to add but want to send Doughnut lots of good luck vibes for her appointment Friday. Hope it's all nothing to worry about. xxxxxxx

Thank you. She woke me up digging on the door for her breakfast. It's hard to believe anything is wrong since she's so happy and hungry! Lots of twirls and wanted nose rubs. Anyway would rather be told nothing is wrong rather than leave it for her to deteriorate.

Whatever he does it may have to be quick since she's so lively. He'll want it done before she nibbles his webcam :)
