Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

Any advice? Eating veg but no hay and no poops

Hi, my 2 year old bun was admitted to the emergency vets about a month ago with stasis. He was let out with meds, but wasn't better and ended up going back in that night. 2 weeks later we were given the all clear from the vet and he came off the meds.

Last night I noticed his left ear was down and he was sort of leaning to the left. I rubbed his tummy which was doughy and definitely not normal and realised he hadn't been eating his hay. He's now completely shunning hay or anything remotely good for him and only eating veggies (very slowly), pellets and treats. I've been syringe feeding him recovery paste (like the Critical care one but from the vet) every 2 hours but he's still not pooping at all, although I saw him eat 3 lots of cecotropes this morning.

Does this sound like he's going into stasis again? Or could it be a dental problem? He has spurs on his teeth which we were told to get done in about a month to allow him to just be at home and healthy for a while. our emergency vet won't take him because he's eating and not lethargic at the moment but I'm not sure what to do to get him eating hay and pooping again. Do I take away the veg in the hope he gets hungry and eats the hay because it's there? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

Hello

Although you say he does have some known dental issues It sounds as though the primary problem at the moment might actually be an ear infection as you mention his 'dropped ear' and that he is 'leaning to the left'. He may be off his food due to ear pain as opposed to dental pain/tummy pain. Obviously this is only an assumption and it is necessary to consult the Vet again ASAP as the lack of poo indicates that his GI tract motility is significantly reduced and as I am sure you know from past experience this can rapidly lead to gut stasis.

Personally I would insist that the Emergency Vet sees him. He/she cant make a diagnosis over the phone. I'd give the Vet a call back and say that you want your Rabbit to be examined as he is clearly 'not right'. Good luck x

I hadn't considered an ear infection, thank you! I have some Metacam left from the stasis episode, would it be a good idea to give it to him? Or is that just asking for trouble?
The emergency hospital doesn't have a rabbit savvy vet on today, my regular vet is a rabbit specialist so if he can get through to the morning I can take him there, I'm just not sure what the best idea is.

I am not qualified to advise you about administering a prescription medication to your Rabbit. I'd give the E Vets a call and ask them, explaining that your Rabbit is showing signs of being in some discomfort and that he is hardly eating and not pooing either.

Hi there and sorry to hear that your rabbit still isn't right.

There could be several causes of leaning over, and an ear infection is only one of them, so don't be alarmed too soon!

I personally wouldn't take away any food that he's willing to eat. But if he's going into stasis, or you fear he might be, then Infacol is a good thing to give. You can give one ml every hour for three doses and then one dose three times daily.

You may be right and it's dental problems. A rabbit with pain over one side of their mouth will lean to that side very often.

As you know, it's best to get him to a vet if there's a suspicion of stasis lurking around the corner!

Good luck!

Thank you for your help! I reran get the E. Vet and they still maintained he wasn't sick enough to go as he's bright and still eating. He suggested I gave him some cisapride though as we still have some and I'm happy to report that, coupled with recovery and tummy rubs every 2 hours he is now pooping, his ear is up again and he's laying quite happily on his tummy! He'll be having a trip to our vet first thing in the morning though! Thank you so much for the help, I'll be buying sone infacol as soon as I can!
