  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Any ideas?

Hi all I've been quiet of late.

I've just dropped my Penelope off at the emergency vets this morning. She seems fine in her self eating and alert but she's very wobbly and falls over??

I had the children with me at the time so the vets took her straight away and admitted her and ate doing tests.

She tried to hop but falls to the side. I can't figure if she's hurt or it's more than that but there's no real way she can hurt herself?

Any ideas to stop my racing mind!

Obviously someone more knowledgeable will be along very soon, but it could be a ear infection or EC. If it is likely to be either of those the vet should treat BOTH, dependent on how good your vet is, you will want antibiotics, metacam and panacur.

As I said earlier, I am sure you will get some better advice in a few minutes
I hope all goes well with Penelope

Hi Kim, and I'm sorry to hear abut Penelope. That's worrying for you, and added pressure you don't need!

There can be many reasons for what you've described, ear issues, neurological as well as the parasite E.C. You don't think it's injury, but if the vet suspected that then they can do an X-ray to confirm.

There's some info in these links which might help a bit, but it's no substitute from a good vet doing a full and thorough assessment which I am sure will be done today for Penelope.

There's a really good Facebook group, which Roxy is a member of and many others who have current head tilt buns:

And this link may give you some help too:

I am copying some links I have found useful in the past, so apologies if you've seen them before. I thought there may be some snippet of usefulness, if you have time to glance at them in the midst of your busy day.

Love and hugs Kim. I hope you get on OK today xx

(PS I am sure you will, but make sure you come away with some Metacam. It is for killing pain of ear infections as well as minimising the inflammation caused by E.C. spores erupting in the brain, so useful on two counts x

I'm sorry to read that Penelope is causing concern. Sending lots of vibes for her and also lots of hugs for you. I hope the vet can establish what the problem is.
