Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Toffee not eating

Toffs and Pebbs

Warren Scout
Hi all

This morning we went up to toffee and she didn't go for any pellets so I brought up some kale and fresh grass and she still didn't eat any of it. After I knew she wasn't eating I picked her up and checked her private area a bit and it wasn't brownish, nice and pink but in some parts I could see yellow (don't know if it's just my eyes though)! She kept laying down and stopping and just sitting which can be normal behaviour just not really at this time in the morning. Pebbles once stopped eating and the vet we had said it was something like gastro intestinal Statis but a bit smaller (I think, I can't really remember) and we got some medication and paste like food, should we start giving that stuff to toffee to?

Thanks, have a great day!

I'm sorry to hear this. Do you know when Toffee last ate or drank anything? Can you tell if she has passed any recent droppings? It's difficult when this happens after an overnight period, as they are not checked on so often, but I think if this is unusual for her I would be wanting to get her examined by a vet today.

I'm almost 90% sure she ate the vegetables last night although I wasn't really paying attention because it's just a routine thing (silly me) I can't monitor the water because of pebbles and they are far away outside so I don't usually see them when I'm inside. I will go check the poo and thank you for the advice!

Hello, sorry for the misconvienience but Toffee just ate a few pellets straight out of my hand and some grass too! So do you guys know why she would have refused everything then ate it all later? Was it just a loss of appetite? Also while I'm here does any of you know, can rabbits eat the stalks of a kale plant because I grew some this year and all that is left is the stalk.

Thanks!

Hi there

Glad to see a more happy update on Toffee :)

There some info here, if the stasis strikes again and your rabbits don't eat:

http://anyflip.com/dvpt/hzvv/basic

http://rabbit.org/gastrointestinal-stasis-the-silent-killer-2/

http://www.melbournerabbitclinic.com/melbournerabbi/stasis.html

It's good to have some Infacol on hand, and a syringe to administer:

Infacol.co.uk.

You can give one ml every hour for three doses, and then one ml three times daily.

And yes, he can eat the stalks of Kale :)
