Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

So, Thumper had another bout of stasis ...

Angie B

Wise Old Thumper
... today but luckily this time bucked up and became a changed bunny actually whilst at the vet and began eating the handful of hay I'd chucked into the carrier, yaay!

Anyway, my question is I'm supposed to be giving her 2 lots of oral meds at midnight tonight, one's emipred and I can't remember the other. As she had the last lot at the vet by injection at about 3pm today, do you think it would do her any harm to have it about 11pm, as in an hour early?

The reason I ask is I'm shattered and want to go to bed. The thought of having to wait until midnight is draining in itself, let alone having to actually wait until midnight. I don't want to OD her of course so if necessary I'll wait, but will one hour make that much difference?

Plus, I didn't really want to give her oral meds by force and then desert her, I wanted to check on her about 10 mins later and then go to bed.

I'm up at 7 with my daughter being back at school, haven't slept well the last couple of days since the hamster escaped (we got him back immediately, thank goodness, but since then I've slept with one ear open ) and my daughter wakes and gets up at 6 so she can do his water, interact with him a little before school, and get herself ready (she's 14), before my alarm goes off at 7. Although I don't need an alarm because I wake when I hear her moving about. Hence I'm done in at the moment.

So do you think 11pm would be okay or shall I wait until midnight? Ta.

No just do it at 11pm Angie :)

I'm sorry this happened. Out of the blue, these things are meant to try us!! xxx

Thank you MM :).

She was only poorly 3 weeks ago and ended up at the emergency vets overnight, really poorly, with her glucose through the roof at 28, so I'm super glad she's shook this off so fast this time. Last time it really knocked her for six so I'm glad she got over it so incredibly fast herself this time as it was before she'd had any meds (other than pain relief from me) that she improved.

Just checked on them to give them their supper of herbs and she's still munching away :). Lots of poops about, too many to be just from one bunneh :) x

You're welcome :)

Yes I remember that episode, and I was thinking it might be a bad one again. I was so relieved to see your question about the timing and not her being poorly!

Good on them for eating so well and I hope you get a good night's sleep xx

Has she has full diagnostic tests if she is having stasis so often? It's probably a symptom of something else

She has, yes, and it's not; they're stumped. Her teeth are fine, she's eating fine, she's fine in all other ways. It's just the way she's made. I do have the option of dragging her all the way to York during an episode to see an absolute specialist, but to be honest I think it would kill her off as they detest the car anyway and it's too far to travel with a sick bunny, over an hour. My vet has rang this specialist and given all the details over the phone and sent the records and xrays to them, but they are also stumped. I don't see what actually handling the poor critter in York could do, I really don't (and neither does my own vet), so I'm not going to put her through it while my vets can make her better. She's just stasis prone for some unknown reason and we just have to accept that, sadly. It will kill her, I give her 18 months, as when she has a really bad bout it takes ages for her to recover and as she's already 6 years old, age is against her for recovery purposes. Poor lamb, she's such a happy bunny with such a fabulous character when she's well and healthy, it's just not fair .

I'm knocking off now to have a bath. Paws crossed they have a peaceful and relaxing evening in the utility room, plus a good snooze, and can go back outside tomorrow xx

I seem to remember you went through the diagnostics about a year ago with Thumper, didn't you? It's a real mystery. Not linked to moulting or anything, is it?

Hope you all get a peaceful night and tomorrow (well later today!) goes OK xx

Yes, MM, they couldn't find anything. No, they don't think it's linked to moulting as it can happen at any time of the year. I did wonder at one point if it was the weather, but again they didn't think so. We did have a cat fight at the front of our house just before one episode as well, which the vet thought may have been stress related (not the cat fight, Thumper's ensuing stasis because of the cat fight!), in fact that was the one just before our Irish trip if memory serves.

The vet thinks it's just Thumper. My son likened it to IBS - brought on for no reason whatsoever and I think it's a good comparison (he gets IBS though luckily only very mildly mostly).

Anyway, sorry I've not been on - the hard drive in my 18-month old Windows 10 PC finally gave up the goat and crashed earlier on. It's been going slower and slower and occasionally freezing the last few weeks, I just put it down to slow internet (I'm not a technical person, didn't realise it was slowly but surely breaking it's back). So now I'm using my old XP PC. Oh the irony that that old workhorse which was only put to pasture because of old age is replacing the baby. Luckily it should come back within a week and should *only* cost £120 inc. labour providing nowt else is wrong, but I won't be on here very often this week I don't think, and that's why.

I just wanted to pop on and give you an update of Thumps in case you thought my silence after yesterday meant something else !

So thank you again for your kind thoughts and wishes, but I'll be logging off and silent for a while now (thank heavens for that some of you will think ).

Be good!! xx

It's always lovely to hear from you Angie :)

Have a good Internet free zone and vibes that Thumper stays well :D

The cause of stasis in some bunnies can be a mystery. You mention that this time she improved after the pain meds and before other meds. In my experience, pain meds can make a huge difference. As you know a bunny in pain will not eat or drink and does not want to move around--all things that make stasis worse. So giving pain meds may have encouraged your bunny to eat, drink and move around which may have improved her stasis. Administering fluids can also make a dramatic difference in my experience.
Your prompt attention to the matter also added to the quick turn around.
Sendin you and your bunny some more positive vibes.
