Hi every bun,

Charlie has been to see the specialist. The past few days his stability really went down hill and was wobbling everywhere. Charlie has always had one rear bent foot but this is can see is mutiple limbs troubling him. Charlie is coming up eight . He has arthritis in all limbs and muscle wastage on shoulders. He has been put on metacam for the next few weeks .
I bought some supplements from the practice of which Charlie will not eat. I'm just wondering what is the way forward and what foods are natural supplements for arthritis. He currently has hay filled litter trays of which i have researched to change to wool? Any advice or recommendations very welcome.

Sorry to hear about Charlie but pleased he's been assessed by the specialist.

When one of mine had severe arthritis, including muscle wastage, the vet gave her an anabolic steroid every six weeks. This is not the same as a corticosteroid. It builds up the muscle and helps with appetite.

What supplements did you get? Have you tried mixing them in some yummy baby food?

I also use a potting tray as a litter tray, with a very low front, for my arthritis buns. They also have a 24/7 electrically heated bed with a cosy top. I've been criticised for doing this, in that it might be dangerous and overheat. However, the ones I get (and others here have done the same, with good results :)) are what my vet recommends to use 24/7 and in fact she uses them herself for the sick animals in the surgery.

The warmth is incredibly helpful, especially as we roll into the colder weather :)

Potting tray is a good idea! It was selective science bone and joint care if you have ever heard of that? What did you use for litter etc xx

Yeah, I got a couple. One as a litter tray, and the other one for the heated bed and cosy blankets. I still used hay in the litter tray.

I have heard of that supplement, but haven't used it. I'm guessing it's based on glucosamine?

I have used other things for arthritis, and also added Tramdol (pain killer) into the mix when things were bad. Acupuncture works very well for arthritis, and also laser therapy, which my vet uses :)

Here's a blog post about it, with some info:

What do you mean by wool?

Do you have a link?

It must of been an American site because I wouldn't use wool . I would of used fleece perhaps. I'll look back through history

Ah that makes sense now :)

I try and use hay and newspaper for as long as possible, but you can substitute vet bed. That's wonderful, but of course there's all the washing ...
Really good and soft, and wicks away the moisture. Trial and error ... see what suits best, and adjust from one to the other as necessary?
