  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

bunny with sore nose

Does anyone have any experience of this......

My friends bunny's nose was bleeding a few weeks back, apparently it didn't seem to be coming from the nostrils, more like a graze. Now it's gone scabby and pussy, it was completely covering the poor things nostrils the other day. The vet gave baytril but it didn't improve things much. Says it's just due to bad breeding! We don't have any great rabbit vets round here to get a second opinion, so wondered if anyone had ever seen anything like this?

It could be Syphilis, that causes ulcers on the nose/lips and around the genetals.

Its spread by touch so becareful not to handle your friends bun and then yours without a good scrub inbetween. Its also passed from babies from the mother.

It is treatable. I think penicillin is used but I'm sure someone will confirm that and the dose for you.

It does look like that, only not as dark. I would have thought the vet would have checked the genitals but I'll ask my friend if it's been ruled out. The rabbit (Baby) lives with 3 other girls and they are all unneutered.
