  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

EC Buns

Hi

Bracken has EC which has been gradually getting worse - He is nebulised almost daily with F10 as he is quite snuffly with discharge, his back legs are very weak causing him to occasionally lose his balance, and he is doing his business everywhere but the litter tray and his back end is pretty much always soaking wet, causing redness on his back legs. He has also by the looks of it starting to get a cataract in one eye.

He is an outdoor rabbit and I don't have any space in the house for two rabbits, so if I had to move them anywhere it would be the garage, which only has the light from one door.

As well as being nebulised, he has metacam twice daily.

I'm going to order some vet bed to put where he normally sits to try and keep him dry, but if anyone has an EC bun and can give me any advice or experience of looking after an EC bun it would be appreciated.

Thank you

Poor lad  I assume that your Vet has ruled out other conditions which may be contributing to his symptoms ? EG a bacterial infection in his bladder (causing incontinence), arthritis in his spine (causing hind leg weakness/paresis), pasteurellosis (causing the respiratory tract symptoms and ocular lesions ? One that looks similar to this

Whilst EC may be the main condition, there is always the possibility of concurrent issues going on too and treating them may improve Bracken's quality of life.

Obviously you will be aware of the fact that his mobility issues and incontinence put him at a very high risk of flystrike. So I would take every possible precaution to try to reduce the risk by using fly netting all over the accommodation, cleaning out soiled bedding several times a day and also doing at least 4 bum checks a day. Not only his undercarriage/bum but also at the base of his spine where it meets his tail and on and around his hind legs. Citronella Oil may be useful as a fly deterrent.

Thanks Jane - no the other things haven't been ruled out - I was planning on making an appointment this week with the vet as he had his 28 day panacur ages ago and the symptoms are definitely worsening as opposed to getting better.

That's a very good idea about using fly netting, I have been very worried about him getting fly strike :(
