Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

Are there buns out there taking Baytril everyday for life or very long periods?

Joel is a happy binky bun who loves his food, enjoys his hay, his partner & nose rubs but suffers from snuffles & gets a greeny discharge. A x-ray confirmed his snuffles were being caused by a tooth root grown in his nasal cavity. He has had several courses of Baytril - 10 day course of 10% Baytril, 0.3 ml twice a day. Period between courses depend on how long his nose is free from the green discharge which can be anything from 10 days to 3 weeks. Would he be better to be on Baytril all the time?

I have had rabbits on Baytril long term (about a year) for other issues with no bad effects - but it is something you should discus with your vet as it may not be appropriate in this case. Baytril is treating the symptoms here, but not dealing with the cause.

Have you talked to a specialist about dealing with the tooth? There may be options on dealing with the it from a dentistry viewpoint, eg keeping the crown shorter may reduce the root length, or it is sometimes possible to inject the root to kill the tooth. It needs someone experienced in rabbit teeth to advise. Your vet may be able to get a second opinion from sending the x-ray off to a specialist so you don't need to travel for an appointment until you have looked at other options.

I had a bunny who was on Baytril for years to control, not cure, his snuffles (not caused by teeth). Eventually the Baytril stopped working entirely and we change to other antibiotics. He lived a long life, much of it on abx.

Personally I would ask the Vet about having a nasal swab taken to identify the exact bacteria involved in the infection. The swab needs to be taken from deep within the nasal passages thus sedation may be needed. If a nasal swab is not an option then I'd want to discuss changing the abx to Sulfatrim/Septrin and for the course to be of at least 3 weeks in duration. Sometimes an injectable Penicillin may be an option.

With the previous stopping and starting of Baytril Joel may have already established some resistance to it. But if the Vet is only happy to give Baytril again and given that so far it has bought about an improvement I'd ask for him to be prescribed a months course rather than 10 days.

Another thing that is necessary when managing chronic Snuffles' is trying to maintain good drainage of the sinuses. This may include nebulising the Rabbit 2-3 times a day, giving a mucolytic such as Bisolvon which can help thin out the snot (sorry!!) and possibly giving a non steroidal anti inflammatory (eg Metacam) to reduce the inflammation within the nasal passages.

How is the Vet managing Joel's Dental Disease ?

Hi there seagreen

I agree with Shimmer - I have had rabbits on Baytril, and other antibiotics, long term with no ill effects. Has the vet ever discussed with you the possibility of taking a deep swab/biopsy? This would identify the cause of the bacteria, and also be more effective than a simple deep nasal swab, where the bacteria are wiped off by the nasal hairs:

(nasal bit is half way down - scroll down)

The other difficulty with stop/start medication is that it *can* breed antibiotic resistance, and therefore the antibiotic would need to be changed. I do understand why your vet gives it periodically though - it's a judgement call.

Good luck xx
