  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Metacam vs Loxicom / Taste?

Teddy usually has Metacam, but vet only had Loxicom (stop gap supply as I didn't get my act together quick enough to put in my online prescription).

Anybody know if they taste the same? Hoping Loxicom doesn't have a nasty taste! (Yet to open the bottle).

My vets (rabbit specialists) stock Metacam for rabbits as they find that some don't like the taste to Loxicom.

I thought it was the same thing, just that loxicom was a brand name? I've given both and both looked and smelled the same. Both were hated because my rabbits hate any medication, even metacam

From info site:

There are many different names for Metacam in different regions around the world. This depends on who has the manufacturing and/or distrubition rights from the owner, Boehringer Ingelheim Vetmedica GmbH. They all have Meloxicam as their main/active ingredient and a vet may give one of these versions that is marketed for another species. The concentration may differ and so will the dosage amount (the 'detailed' versions of the calculators can take this into account). The others might not 'taste' exactly the same and many not have Metacam's "honey odor", therefore it might be harder to give the medication. All of these are oral suspensions.

My two boy bunnies certainly have their preferences; Fiver (minirex) prefers Metacam (Boehringer manufacturer) and my minilop, Mimzy does better with OstiLox/Loxicom. Very odd as I can't imagine it tastes too different, but Loxicom will wrinkle Fiver's nose every time and he absolutely won't swallow it. :?

My Vet has found this to be the case too.

Cara if Teddy does not approve of the taste of Loxicom you could try mixing it in to a teeny tiny blob of Set Honey x

My cat is on loxicom rather than metacam because she's allergic to one or more of the exipients in metacam which aren't in loxicom. Although it doesn't have metacam's 'honey odour' (whatever that is), it is still sweet and fairly palatable and she will still lick it off the syringe like she did with metacam. It's certainly not bitter or horrid in the way that baytril is!

:thumb:

It's a variable thing as to how rabbits react to one or the other. As with most things rabbit :lol:

I imagine the mechanics of the medication is the same. But yeah...bunnies are picky. :?
Nothing quite as satisfying as making the hoomin slave go completely broke having to order 'the good stuff' from a pharmacy miles away because 'a spoonful of sugar' isn't enough to get the essential medicine down!

No, it doesn't Jane, it's far, far easier to use. And the bottle is clear too so you have an idea how much is left. (Sam gave us Loxicom for Rudy and it was only after I had paid for it that I realised there might be a problem .. but there wasn't, it was as much a treat for him as his Metacam was:love:].

They always surprise us :thumb:

I'm not happy with how difficult it is to draw loxicom though. There is no special syringe for it as there is for metacam and if I insert the dosing syringe wrongly I either get bubbles or the precious liquid dribbles down my arm. :(
That being said, my metacam syringe did get stuck after opening and drawing from my new bottle the other week and when the dosing syringe shifted I blasted metacam all over my face and kitchen counter.

"Practically perfect in every way" I am most cetainly not!

Why, welcome to my world :)

Mine are given Inflacam which is apparently honey flavoured although my rabbits aren't keen. It comes with a stopper and a little hole so that you can fit the syringe tip in perfectly whilst the bottle is upside down, not wasting any medicine and letting you get right to the bottom.

Just to clarify, although different brands may have the exact same amount of meloxicam (the active ingredient), the other ingredients (excipients) such as flavour will vary. I think there is some confusion because doctors/pharmacists/vets will often describe two different branded/generic medicines as 'the same' because it's the simplest way to reassure the patient/owner that they are getting the same active ingredient, the 'drug'. They might have different tastes and textures but should have the same pain killing effect and active ingredient

And in Human Medicine its a way to try to prescribe a Generic drug rather than the Branded version as the former is cheaper for the NHS. I had to jump through hoops to get one of my ADs prescribed in a Branded form as all the Generics messed with my stomach something awful.
