Smelly rabbit

Alicia

Mama Doe
I was cuddling the rabbits yesterday and I thought Izzy was a bit smelly  she's not dirty anywhere, but she's quite old and scruffy looking. Is this normal? She smelt like a farm

No, it's not normal. Is Izzy well within herself ? Is her poo normal ? Any weightloss ?

Have you checked her scent glands ? Whilst the smell of impacted scent glands is not what I would call a 'Farmyard Smell' (which I associate with coccidia overload) it may be that her scent glands are full of gunk.

She's ok in herself, she's not been quite right for a few months and has lost a bit of weight but I've been backwards and forwards to the vets with her and basically been told that she's old and there's not much they can do with her. I've never noticed the smell before, if it's her scent glands can I take her to the vets and they'll sort it or is it a bigger problem? I can give them a ring this afternoon I just want a better understanding of what's up with her

Given the 'not being right', the weightloss and the 'Farmyard smell' I would be considering the possibility of a coccidia overload. This can cause gastrointestinal problems (usually in baby Rabbits) and Liver problems (more likely in adult Rabbits). I would want to consult a Vet ASAP

You can clean a rabbit's scent glands easily yourself :D
