Nursing myxi rabbit

Nicky

New Kit
We are dealing with a 6 month old un vacc'd bunny with probable myxi. Any tips on nursing, and how long it will be before we see an improvement. At present he has swollen eyes and genitals though none of the lesions on the ears etc. He is eating veggies but not much else.
He is on baytril and rimadyl. He has been taken away from his bonded wife as she is unvacc'd too as we are trying to avoid her getting it though we know she may well already be incubating it.
I am expecting him to get worse yet but just a timescale would be good!

I'd stock up on Supreme Science Recovery (available from vets) its concentrated pellets as a powder you mix up with water and contains probiotic which is handy for a bun on ab's. If he's not eating much then gently suringing it into his mouth may help.

I'm sure bluebunny can give you some tips with her experience so far with William.

Good luck!

Tam

Hi have a look at my post about william, you will see how his myxi has progressed over 3 weeks, its very difficult to say when he will get better as he is also un vaccinated. He is on 0.5 ml of baytril twice a day and 2 drops of metacam once a day.he had days where he went off his food but then he would make up for it the next day.
William has oilbass oil on his blanket and a burner with eucluptis oil in.
It is hard work nursing as this is my first ever bunny with myxi i have relyed on others for help.
hope this has helped you a bit

Hiya Nicky, there is a helpline for bunnies with Myxomatosis and a wonderful web site detailing how to care for bunnies with Myxo. and VHD.
I have emailed the details to Tamsin and hopefully we will get a link on here shortly to the web site.
Hope this helps :D ..good luck with nursing the poorly bunny, we have experienced bunnies with myxo. firsthand and although it was intensive care both bunnies survived and are happy healthy bunnies once more :D

Nicky you are looking at a timescale of about 3 to 5 weeks of intensive care, and several months thereafter to rebuild the bunnies strength and muscle bulk.
Bunnies need to be vaccinated after having Myxo. proper(We were guided as to this by a Rabbit Specialist as I thought the bunnies would have natural immunity thereafter , but this is not the case), but there is a set guideline as to when this should be done..I think it is about 6 weeks post symptoms...but your Vet would have to research this.

Thanks so much Tamsin for adding that Link...it is an excellent web site and dedicated to a lovely bunny too :D

Thanks for the link.
His swollen eyes are worse today, he is still eating some veggies by himself though not much else.
Will keep you informed.
