You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Chipped Molar? UD

*Bex*

Mama Doe
Has anyone's bunny ever had a chipped molar?
I have a poorly rabbit at the moment and this is the only thing that they can find that is unusual. She's displaying dental symptoms of avoiding all hard food (pellets, broccoli and her treat) she's eating herbs, grass, dandelions and hay. She's also very subdued. She had a routine dental two weeks ago, recovered well and was herself all last week then started displaying these symptoms Sunday night/Monday.

X-rays and blood tests don't show anything else to concern the vets.

Bex, yes one of my rabbits has had this :( Oddly the problem occurred for mine after a routine dental.

What does the vet suggest doing about it? How old is your rabbit?

(Are you seeing Honor?)

What happened with your bun? How did they treat it?
She's on metacam x2 daily to see if it settles it, 4 doses in and no change. Back to vets Tuesday (will probably end up going sooner though) I assume surgery or something if she's the same.
Not seen Honor, she was at my local vets for initial X-rays and bloods (they are good and do all they can to help, but not specialists)
Took her to Crab Lane on thurs evening as I wouldn't have got to Honor before they shut, they found the molar chip.

She's around 4/4.5, hates a lot of hands on care as she was previously and abused breeders rabbit so she doesn't take well to overly poking and prodding

This might sound to be an odd question, but did the Vets check your Rabbit's ears ? I ask as in some Rabbits ear pain can cause the symptoms/behaviour you describe. The chipped molar may be an incidental finding x

I'll PM you :D

Definitely didn't check her ears at Crab Lane, not sure if they did at local vets when she was hospitalised for the day. I have looked in her ears and they look ok (although I obviously can't see right down them!) she is a lop x

It is a long shot, but I'd ask the next Vet to examine her to check her ears. You could have a feel around the ear base to see if there are any lumps/signs of tenderness.

I am a bit paranoid about 'ears issues', especially in Lops as I have had more encounters with various ear problems than I would like to think about.

Yes, I know you've had far too much experience with poorly ears :( I've had a good feel around her face for signs of abscess but I will concentrate on the ear area when I give her her metacam later on (I don't want to have to handle and upset her more than necessary)

Forgot to mention the occasional dirty bum/soft poo that she's produced on and off all week (plenty of normal ones in between)

As always, your advice is much appreciated! X

If her eating has been 'off' her poos are likely to be effected x

Depending upon where the chip is, and what it's doing to her jaw movements when she tries to eat, I can well understand the bum issue. It's a bit like us, when there's something odd in the mouth it's impossible to forget about it.

It's possible it's causing pain x

Thanks MM, I know she said her chip was on the right side but didn't elaborate as to where abouts in her mouth.
She's acting the same as she does when her mouth is sore, apart from when she's ready for an actual dental she generally goes on complete food refusal but she's eating what she can now, although with zero enthusiasm (she's usually food obsessed) and she's just quiet and 'meh' in herself. I've put her down on the grass where she'll usually love running about but she either just goes and sits or heads straight back to the shed.
What did the vet do with your rabbits chipped tooth? X

Ok, so we're actually looking at a probable heart problem, she's currently got a chest full of fluid and is now on furosemide to try and clear that away then we can assess and see what is wrong and how to manage it.

Poor girlie  The Furosemide should help her feel much better relatively quickly. I hope the Vet can find out the precise nature of the problem and get her on to appropriate treatment to manage it xx

Thanks Jane, I do hope so. She has eaten today, and felt well enough to give me a good boot in the stomach after I just gave her more furosemide xx

So sorry to hear this :(

In my experience the furosemide works really well. I had a rabbit on that and also Fortekor and another med - all worked well together

Good luck xx

Thanks, glad to hear you had good success with heart meds. Fingers crossed for the same for us! She's currently just on the furosemide (alongside metacam and domperidone, and long acting antibiotic that vets gave her earlier) but I believe when we know what's going on they'll decide on long term meds xx

How did the vet diagnose it Bex?

How did the vet diagnose it Bex?

She was putting a lot of effort into her breathing and began really kind of sucking her body in under her ribs when being examined (hard to describe!) she took X-rays which showed just a load of fluid on her chest and hardly any room for her lungs to expand. She couldn't see the heart for the amount of fluid x

Oh Gosh, no doubt about that then.

Furosemide definitely good - I hope it helps her breathing. Poor little one.

I hope you're not too worried by it all?
