  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Wild rabbit with myxi

Alicia

One of the dogs caught a rabbit today on our walk and it had myxi. She dropped it in my car, I used a poo bag to pick it up and move it but I don't know how much risk my rabbits are at. What should I do?

Obviously I've washed my hands thoroughly and wiped the seat with antibacterial wipes, as that's all I have with me right now

I wouldn't worry too much if yours are all vaccinated?

I had a similar situation recently and what I did was consult my vet - if they are rabbit savvy they should be able to give you a balanced view if they think anything should be done. Mine thought there was nothing to do in the circumstances :D

I'm not sure as the dog ran off and came back with it, but when I got the rabbit away from her it was still warm but dead then which makes me think that the dog caught it :( thank you for all the advice, they've had the combi vaccination, I'm not exactly sure what that covers, myxi and VHD? I changed my clothes and shoes just in case, hopefully they'll be fine

Yes the combi vaccine covers myxi and VHD1. The Filavac vaccination covers VHD1 and VHD2.

Good idea to change your clothes :)

The combi vaccine (Nobivac) covers for Myxo and RHD1

But it does not cover for RHD2. Given that you dog walk in areas with a wild Rabbit population I would definitely get your Rabbits vaccinated with the RHD2 Vaccine (Filivac)

RHD2 is a real threat to ALL Pet Rabbits, it is spread far more easily than is Myxomatosis. I'd have a read of this information and contact your Vet as soon as possible to discuss having your Rabbits Vaccinated against RHD2

My Vet has some information about RHD2 on her Blog

There's a thread on here abut RHD2, in case you want more info :thumb:
