Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Incontinence - Gabapentin

bunny babe

Wise Old Thumper
 I know I am not on here as often but would appreciate anyone letting me know if they have used Gabapentin for their buns and what dose.

Cassie has suffered with incontinence for about a year now (maybe longer) and has been on incurin which seemed to help. Recently she seemed to be getting worse and were walking into the shed to "puddles" which is unlike her, so we had her checked out a couple of weeks ago. Her bloods were good (better than a year ago) but the x-ray showed some interesting results. Some of her discs were closer together and towards the top of her back 2 discs were out of alignment. Our vet thinks that this is having an affect on her nerves further down and she does not know when she wants to go for a wee.

For now we are continuing with the incurin and metacam but going to add in some propalin and review her in 3 weeks. There was mention of Gabapentin if things did not improve.

We are not sure if the incontinence will get better or something we will have to manage so any hints on how we could manage this would also be appreciated. We are of course checking her more regularly with flies coming out more.

In herself Cassie is bright as a button and is not actually showing signs of any pain and is hopping around fine - it is mainly the incontinence. Within 24 hours of having her incurin she is a little humper when they are outside and is annoying Rambo so we are having to try to manage that too as she is annoying him and don't want her to do any more damage to her back. Lucky he is pretty placid with her.

My specialist put doughnut on propalin when she was wet all the time. He thinks it's good stuff. We weren't sure what was wrong with her at the time. She also tried gabapentin as she kept rubbing her throat. Her throat was ulcerated and had scar tissue so it was supposed to work on that. He described it as if someone loses a limb and they can still feel it and it hurts or itches the medicine will help that. Because it works on the nervous system I found her to be a lot more jumpy on it. Little things would scare her. It's is worth trying propalin first.
One thing I would recommend is if your rabbit is wet you get him shaved. Doughnut was wet for months and I got her shaved and she had lots of little nicks where the fur had pulled at her skin as it was heavy. I felt terrible as she must have been in pain with that.

. Good luck

Has the Vet ever suggested showing you how to check Cassie's bladder for 'fullness' and how to express it manually if it is very full (due to Cassie not being able to feel the fullness) ? I am just wondering if that may be another way of managing the problem without adding more drugs ?

My Piggy, Tilly, was also on Propalin, worked really well.

Thanks Jane, that is a good idea and definitely something I will ask about. I know that her bladder is quite small as they have had problems getting samples directly from it in the past but it is definitely worth a go.

We have trimmed her fur as close as we dare to stop her pulling at fur and to make washing/drying her a bit easier (she is such a fluffy girl).

With propalin - can I ask what dosages people used for it to be effective as we tried it before and it was not too successful. Cassie weight 2kg and she is 9 years old this summer.

I cant remember the dose my Rabbit was prescribed, it was a few years ago now. As it's use in Rabbits is 'off licence' I think dose rates are going to be anecdotal and down to the discretion of the prescribing Vet :)
