Rabbit acting odd

Hello

I've noticed my rabbit is a little bit more subdued than normal. He normally follows me about like a puppy trying to get food off me but I noticed last night before bed and today he seems to be just sitting more and just doesn't seem as bright as usual.

He ate his supper and breakfast and even followed me downstairs to the kitchen this morning- he had pellets, kale and blueberries and then back up the stairs. It is hard to explain but he just doesn't seem right. Oh and his poops are normal- no small poops and no squidgy ones either. Maybe a bit darker than I'd like, but that is it.

I took him to the vet this morning and his tummy is not bloated or hard but there were no gurgling sounds. Usually he puts up a good fight at the vets, even the last time when he had stasis and his tummy was sore and hard. But this time he pretty much just sat and squirmed a little. He got a shot of metacam and a drug to keep his tummy moving. I hope this was the right thing to do- he did seem to grind his teeth before the vets and his tummy did not sound active.

I took him home and he hopped out and went under the bed in the spare room. I left him alone for a bit and then came back and fed him some coriander, all of which he ate. When I next popped my head round he was on top of the bed sleeping which I think is a good sign. But yet he still seems very quiet and not as active.

Am i being OTT here or does anyone have any ideas what could be wrong?

He was out in the garden for about 40mins yday and he ate A LOT of plants, mostly grass, dandelions and a bit of rosemary. I did chase him around the garden to get a bit of clematis out of his mouth at one point!! But at most it would of been a couple of bites. He also was very fond of some other plant I don't think he can eat and I was constantly chasing him off but again I don't think he ate enough to upset him.......then I was wondering if he could of sprained something when he was binkying about the garden?

He isn't drinking excessively but I am also worried something he ate has affected his liver or kidneys.....PLEASE HELP!

Grass is very rich at the moment (new spring growth) and if he ate a lot of it he may have given himself tummy ache. Eating grass would also cause poo to be darker.

Thanks Jane! Perhaps that is what it is! He had been out the previous weekend and ate all round him and seemed fine. But maybe he over did it a bit yday.

He is a french lop and finally seems to have stopped shedding. I was worried he maybe had hair causing internal issues but his littertray doesnt seem to suggest that. He can be a bit if an odd bod going in and out of moulting.

Fingers crossed he will be ok! I'll be keeping a close eye on him! Such a worry these long earred bandits are!!

'Long eared bandits'................

I hope he will be back to his usual self soon xx

No real advice here but just wanted to say that I don't think that you are being OTT at all! You know your rabbit better than anyone so if you think that something feels off then you should always trust your gut.
I hope that he feels better soon :)

I'm home and he seems a good bit brighter. Nice load of golden poops in his tray. However, I'm still not happy hes 100% ok tho.

I am wondering if it could be his teeth? He hasnt touched his hay today and he keeps moving his mouth about as i watch him.

What are the common symptoms of bad teeth? He doesnt drool or choke and he muches through his pellets and veggies- and normally his hay too.

However, I have noticed hes gone off carrots but then again hes also turning his nose up at basil which is soft n easy to eat.

Going off hay is certainly one possible sign of Dental issues. The jaw action needed to eat hay is rotational which can mean sharp teeth scrape the cheeks/tongue when eating hay. But not so much when eating pellets as the jaw action is more 'up and down'. Did the Vet have a look in your Rabbit's mouth as part of the examination ?

Peter isnt the most compliant long earred bandit....so no the vet didnt. Its only been yday n today ive noticed he hadnt touched his hay, but he certainly has no trouble eating grass, long stems of coriander/parsely/basil.

Does he get enough fresh grass? The best hay is just good enough for the back end of my beasts when they have grass. Even if it's not really much, they very unwillingly eat hay then.

Anyway, before offering a bunny free pick of the garden introduce grass slowly over a few days.

I give the scraggy old growth of grass first to rabbits not used to it. My own have had it all winter so no problem there :)

Ive changed his litter tray so i can monitor input and output.

I am beginning to worry that he is ignoring his hay but maybe i am pandering to him too much so ive gone downstairs to leave him alone.

Up until he went outside yday he had big golden poops and munched through his hay. So surely dental issues are unlikely.....gah i am doing my head in!!!

I have a vet apt booked for 2moro morning so il chat to the rabbit specialist ! I hate this feeling of dread yet i cant place why i have it!!!

Has he been eating grass and herbs? That would make his poops smaller and darker.

Hope you can rid of your feeling of dread ... x

Sending lots of vibes for Peter. Hopefully your vet can put your mind at rest tomorrow when he examines his teeth.

I hope you find that it was just the fact that something in the garden gave him tummy ache or that he's eating grass and prefering that to hay. My rabbits will certainly always eat grass in preference to hay. Grass also means that their poo is darker than when they are just eating hay.

The vet said to keep him eating hay and greens. He has had some coriander and kale which he pounced on. Im not feeding him anything more 2nyt as i want him to eat his hay.

If i cud just see him eating hay id be soooooooo much happier!
