Chloe/ Tail wound/ CONTAINS WOUND PIC

MummyBunnyEm

Mama Doe
On Monday Chloe went for her annual demat under GA. Earlier this evening I saw her hop and noticed something on the side of her tail, turned out it was an open wound about an inch in length.

I just couldn't believe it, there had been no mention of this when I went to collect her. There weren't even any discharge notes which I thought unusual as normally I get a sheet on looking out for signs of gut stasis etc.

I took her to see the out-of-hours vet, unfortunately it was one that let's just say I'm not a fan of. The wound had been mentioned in Chloes notes and they had glued it up. Why they failed to notify me about this I don't know. The vet seems to think that some of the skin that has dried up will need to be removed under GA. I said really I'd like a second opinion so I'm going back first thing tomorrow. I asked her to clean the wound before I left.

I'm just quite concerned that she's only just had a GA and I really don't want to put her through another... There isn't enough skin now to glue the wound back together, so what will they do? The vet mentioned about removing the tail, well I was not impressed by that.

Aaaaaargh. I'm well p***** off about the situation.

Oh no!! Poor Chloe. :(

I have to say, is give it a little time to see how things progress but only if you are able to keep it clean in the meantime. Otherwise, I'd be tempted to visit a different vet.

Removing the tail? This sounds awful- you must be so upset!

I wouldn't consider removing the tail until you've seen another vet about this. You have to see someone who knows what they are doing. It's quite unacceptable that they didn't tell you about the wound. I would certainly be hopping mad

Depending on what needs doing, I would hope it could be done under sedation and not GA. I would certainly be reluctant for another GA - don't they ever do the demat under sedation instead of GA?

Poor Chloe  Accidents happen, even the most skilled Vet is human and can make an error, but to have not told you about it is very bad practice and grounds for a pretty big written complaint. Not that money should be the main focus here, but there is NO WAY you should have to pay for ANY treatment to rectify the problem. Even if said treatment involves a referral to a surgical specialist/plastic surgeon (if skin grafts were to be an option).

Sending lots of vibes for Chloe xx

As everyone has said, completely unacceptable for them to have not told you. That's bad practice and definitely needs a formal, written complaint.

Tail amputation is a bit extreme.
I'd personally see if it'll heal by 2nd granulation. (So leave the wound open and allow it to heal naturally - it takes longer as it has to grow completely new skin cells but it can work).

Ouch  Is she having Metacam ?

I agree with D+P, it is way too soon to be thinking of amputation. I have seen similar wounds that do eventually heal. It can take several weeks though and in the meantime great care is needed to avoid any bacterial infection setting in. There are treatments that can be used to encourage the granulation process and hopefully the Vet you see today will be able to advise you about this.

Yes she's on it for her arthritis. I'll update once I've seen the vet :(

I thought it was a silly comment to make. There's a language barrier and so she comes across very unsympathetic too which doesn't make things any easier lol.

Just a brief update as I'm off to work. Just a case of keeping it clean for now & she's been prescribed Baytril. Appointments & medication free of charge so I'm pleased about that.

Ooooh, wow, I see what you mean about the skin not meeting!

But as I mentioned in my first post to you, I wouldn't go down the route of amputation straight away... seems a bit drastic.

Are the vets expecting you to pay for all the follow up visits to fix this?

What?! That's unbelievable. Why on earth were you not told? If you hadn't noticed (unlikely) she could have got a nasty infection.

I'd be furious. :(

It wasn't even mentioned in todays appointment thank goodness! I don't think they will expect me to pay MM.

The vet overseeing Chloe's demat just rang, extremely apologetic. She said the nurse went through a mat and caught the skin and the reason the glue hasn't held it together is because of poor blood supply in the tail. She wasn't happy about the vet who made the tail amputation remark. She said she's seen much worse wounds on a tail that have then healed. Oh and she's going to talk to the nurses about not missing out important information when animals are discharged  I've got an appointment booked for Chloe next fri :)

Typed this out on my phone so sorry if it's all a bit blah

I am glad that the Vet called and apologised. I hope that Chloe's tail will heal without the need for any drastic action x

Well I'm glad that things are turning out as well as they can, given the circumstances :)

Is Chloe showing any signs of being bothered by her tail wound at all?

I wonder if the nurse even told the vet about the mishap. Instead of trying to avoid an unpleasant conversation or save her own skin, she should have put Chloe first.
Not only should they not charge you on follow up, they should also give you a credit for the botched de-matting.

Here are some extra healing vibes for Chloe.
