Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

Can i please ask if anybody on here has any experience with giving their end stage renal disease bunny the anabolic steroid injections of Nandrolone. Vet has advised it is the last attempt to prolong life but worried about the side effects.

Any comments would be appreciated.

Hello, I am sorry that your Rabbit has renal problems.

I have had several 'Renal Rabbits' who were prescribed Nandralone . All of them benefited from the anabolic steroid in conjunction with other treatments. None of the Rabbits had any adverse side effects. Is your Rabbit on other treatment too ?

He is on 200ml of iv fluids - he cannot tolerate anymore than that and Benefortin. The vet thinks the remaining kidney is cancerous and it has spread to his liver. Can i ask at what stage did you start the injections. Sorry i should have said he had a kidney removed 3 years ago for cancer.

Hi there and welcome to the Forum

I am sorry to hear that your rabbit has end stage renal failure.

I have experience of renal failure rabbits being given Nandrolone. My rabbits didn't have side effects from it - what side effects is your vet worried about?

Oh dear

My Rabbits were started on Nadrolone when they were diagnosed as being in CRF. They were also prescribed Benazepril and in some cases erythropoietin.

Can I ask how old your rabbit is?

I'm sorry your vet's prognosis doesn't seem too good, but if the diagnosis of cancer isn't confirmed, then there is reason to hope.

How do you feel his quality of life is?

His kidney is very enlarged - when an ultrasound was done in December it was abnormal. His bloods are all off the scale - and getting worse with each blood test we have. The vet has just told me about the side effects. She has not used anabolic steroids in a rabbit before. I am just worried if i agree to them they will make his kidney or liver worse. He must be aged 8-9. We have had him 51/2 years. His quality of life is not too bad considering how ill he is.

Can i ask how long they survived after starting the steroids please

Comparisons of how long a Rabbit lives once started on Nandralone are not really that useful as each case will be unique. Obviously your Rabbit's situation is exacerbated by the fact that he only has one kidney. Is his liver function also abnormal ?

Billirubin was raised - just do not what to do for the best

Well sometimes when we find ourselves and our Bunny in the last chance saloon there may be little to lose by taking a risk. Could your Vet contact an Exotics Specialist for advice, one who may have first hand experience of using Nandrolone ?

Yes she is nearly finished her training as an exotic vet and has spoken to her mentor who is a trained exotic vet. Just do not know what to do for the best

I think if your vet can get some reassurance of the benefits of the anabolic steroids for use in renal failure, that will be far more use than any of us telling you that they worked well for our rabbits.

I am glad his quality of life is pretty good. That's the overriding consideration, as your rabbit won't realise he has a shortened lifespan - it's us humans who deal with that sad aspect of their care.

yes it is such a hard choice to make - she has never used steroids in a rabbit before and could not advise me that is why i thought i would ask here - thank you for all your comments - still undecided :(

When does she intend to ask her mentor about whether it might be suitable re side effects etc?
