  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

finding a rabbit friendly vet

I looked on the RWA site and it says that the vet list they have only shows that the vets have asked to be on the list ie it doesn't mean that they have to have done anything special.

The fact is that though I live closish to bashinstoke there probs is not a vet on the list for me anyway so either way I have to find myself a vet. How did people go about this esp when most places have multipul vets in the practice?

Hi Amber, if you pop across to the Vaccinations thread in the Welfare section I have posted, you may find some information there.. :D

Hi there,

Don't know if this is any help, but can i recommend the vet i used to work with;

David Muge
Animals Are Us
371a The Elms, High St,
Harlington
Middx

0208 897 0888

(2mins from Heathrow Airport)

As a qualified veterinary nurse i've worked at quite a few different places & out of all the places i've worked as he is the most clued up vet i've ever known in this field. He has either treated or operated on my animals & my rabbits have returned from an anaesthetic looking like nothing had ever happened!. He is especially known for his small animal & exotic work.

Have you tried asking Annie, she's in Hampshire and if she isn't close to you she might know someone in your are that has a bunny and can recommend a vet.

I find writing down the questions I want to ask before phoning helps.

Hello
well I have a lovely vet called Mr Donnell at Hawksdown in Winchester : 01962 884000

Orchard Veterinary Surgery in Romsey owned and run by Virginia Richardson of the Rabbit Health and Husbandry book and Rabbit Nutrition: 01794 830288

Strathmore Veterinary Surgery Andover, that has Mr Chitty who is talking at the Rabbit Welfare Conference this year: 01264 352323

these may still be too far, as I know you said Wilson isn't a keen traveller, Chris with Simba is in Basingstoke, do you have a good vet you can recommend?

annie

I havent taken him to a vet as yet, however i was recommened a veterinary practice to go to on Worting road, Near to Safeways:
Gough & Partners
65 Worting Rd
Basingstoke
Hampshire
RG21 8YX
01256 465409

The person who recommended them to me said that they have a rabbit specialist. I have used the vets for my hamster and my sister takes her dog there and we have never had problems with them.
Hope that is of help.
Chris

wow I am actually spoiled for choice in Basingstoke by the look of it. Thanks. Thats about 15mins from me. I was considering going the 45mins to Romsey but we have two cars and one is slightly noiseier to travel in, and after rushing Wilson to Fleet - not far from here and going over some of that 'traffic calming surfacing' (ie painted cattle grids) I am very aware of noise in that car. Unfortunatly its my main car so I have to take that into consideration when traveling as I cannot always guarentee getting the quieter car.
Thanks again for the recommendations in the two threads.
hugs

I just thought I should follow this up and say that I went to my normal vet. I just so chickened out, but I did talk to the vet about mixy and things and I was happy with what he said. When I went in today the lady vet doing the innoculation was actually the one who did his teeth last week and she seems very nice. Part of me feels like I chickend out and didn't have the courage of my convictions but after the 5 min drive into the village I think it was the best option. Wilson really didn't like the journey in and untill we change cars moving his too far is really difficult.

Thanks for all the help I did appreciate it, I feel kinda bad for chickening out.
