  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Lethargic Bunny - concerned

Young Bun
Hello, we are looking for a bit of advice...

Our 5 year old mini lop Fudge isn't her usual self. Last night she was very lethargic, not eating, led down in the hutch and appeared to be breathing a little oddly. We tried to get her to eat but she didn't even her usual favourite, Kale which she normally jumps at you to get.

This morning she seems a little brighter, she is very lethargic still but moving a little more and has eaten a little grass and a bit of kale. She does appear to be shaking/shivering a little when still as well.

Has anyone got any ideas or suggestions?

Thanks

Vet - today. She sounds really poorly.

If her ears feel cold, have you got anything that would do as a hot water bottle? A snugglesafe heatpad would be good, but even a bottle of hot water wrapped in a towel would do.

I agree, she needs to see a vet asap. The shaking/shivering might also be that she is in pain.

I hope she gets on OK.

Yes, your rabbit sounds very poorly and really does need to see a vet as soon as possible. Your usual vet should have a message on their phone telling you who to contact in an emergency. Good luck.

Poor Fudge!

It sounds like her temperature may be low from what you say? If so you must see a vet asap. She is obviously trying very hard, but fighting something.

Good luck xx

We have snugglesafe heatpads that we give the rabbits every night in winter. She does appear brighter today but I think we will take a trip to the vet this afternoon.

Often it gets more expensive to go to an out of hours vet the later you leave it - so the sooner, the better. I really wouldn't want to leave her until tomorrow as it's already been a couple of days. Rabbits normally hide their symptoms - so one that is so obviously poorly is really very poorly, and the sooner she is seen, the sooner she can get appropriate treatment.

Some of the vets in Pets at Home stores are normally open on Sundays (so a standard consultation fee rather than out of hours fee). Otherwise, your usual vet should have details of the out of hours service they use on an answer machine message.

Good news....

Our strong bunny seems to have made a recovery, she has nicked all the carrot and kale and is eating, she is far more responsive and appears nearly back to her normal self.

We will keep our eye on her but she seems to be better.

She did this last year around the same time of the year.

Very strange....
