Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Misaligned front teeth - removal?

Snb93

New Kit
I have a 6 month old Netherland Dwarf called Pablo who unfortunately has misaligned front teeth. We're currently having to go to the vet every four weeks to get the teeth clipped and poor little Pablo gets a bit grumpy for a few days until we manage to get him to the vets.

We don't want to see him in pain this much and the vet suggested having his front teeth taken out. However they've come back with a quote of £666 - is this about the right price? How much (approximately) would you expect to pay for this procedure?

The removal could be beneficial.
It's a difficult procedure as if they leave any in the jaw, it'll just grow back again so the price seems fair to me.

Is he insured? Insurance should cover the cost.

I've never had a rabbit with their teeth removed, but I hear they can cope perfectly fine with a few changes.

See my post on malocclusion. We decided to go ahead with removal but it has not been straightforward and Oscar has had further surgery today. I would suggest you only use a rabbit savvy vet - which ours certainly is - and get a referral if need be. Cost of first op around £400. Good luck.

Rabbits cope well without their incisors but it does seem a high price. Different Vets charge different prices but the main concern is they are experienced with rabbits.

Absolutely. I would have paid more if need be for the right vet for such a procedure. I didn't ask our local vets for a price because while they are excellent at more routine stuff and competitively priced this procedure needs a specialist in my view.

Hi thee and welcome to the forum

I had a quote from a very rabbit savvy vet, who I would trust, with lots of experience of this sort of thing. The cost was £350. I believe what you've been quoted is far too high.

If you want to find a good vet in your area, begin another thread in Rabbit Chat with the title "Rabbi Savvy Vet need in (your location)

Or you can look here:

Good luck xx

If the quote included skull radiography aswell as the GA/Surgical procedure, Inpatient Care and all medication then it is feasible that the cost could be as you have been quoted, especially if you are in the London area. I would certainly not want the procedure done without prior radiographs being taken and I would also want to insure that the Vet is very experienced in Rabbit Dental procedures.

Good luck :)

You are absolutely right Jane re x ray and cost as Oscar had two sets of x rays done at another vets so that was not included in the surgical fee.

I had four sets of X-rays on a rabbit recently which cost me £120. I still think the estimate is way too high!

Also, as with neuters and vaccinations, there is a set fee in a lot of vets for tooth extraction. Obviously they can't forsee difficulties, but if straightforward it's usually less than that, with X-rays are included.

Good you got a quote upfront rather than a nasty shock!

Thank you everybody for your swift and helpful responses :)

This is something I will definitely be looking into and I'm pretty sure I want to go for the surgery, as I can't stand to see Pablo like this any longer! I notice a lot of you are in the Cambridgeshire-ish area - are there any recommendations?

You could drop a PM to Parsnipbun. She uses vets a lot and lives near Cambridge. She may be able to recommend a good vet for the specialist treatment your bun requires :)

Iain Cope at Vets4Pets in Newmarket. He was previously at Cambridge Vet Group in Cherry Hinton. He is an exotics specialist with a wealth of experience of rabbits.

He was going to be my suggestion too - he comes highly recommended in the area.
I'd also trust him to admit if he's unable/not confident to do something and would refer you to someone he knows that has more experience.
