  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Young Bun
So our giant guy earnest has been away at bonding boot camp with his 2 new buddies for the last 10 days or so and we have received a call to say the bond has been halted due to him seeming to be very withdrawn and slightly going off his food. The people looking after him have been great and have taken him to a vet for a checkup and gut stimulant but have brought it to our attention that his behaviour and the amount of fur he is shedding is abnormal.
He has been doing a constant shed for over a year now and needs brushing/human assistance every other day or he ends up matted. There is always fur about an inch or so long left on the patches he sheds and he never has any bald patches but on average he sheds a full carrier bags worth of fur every week.
We are the kind of owners who take our animals to the vet the second we think something is wrong so he is well cared for and not neglected, he doesn't have mites (I have had him checked for that in the recent past) and he has a clean dry home. He always gets a clean bill of health from the vets aside from a few instances of needing gut stimulants so although we found his shedding bizarre we always assumed it was just the way he was.
He eats science selective dry food and has done since we got him at 9 months old. He has Spring greens and broccoli every day plus a third piece of veg which we vary every day, his hay has been changed a few times this year as we have noticed quality continuity issues with some brands but is currently on Timothy hay with marigold and dandelion from b&m.
Behaviour wise he needs encouraging to do ANYTHING, preferring to stay in his shed and only coming out for an hour or so a day even though he has 24h access. we always thought he was a lazy boy but now I'm wondering if he feels unwell all of the time and if it's connected to the excessive shedding.

We collect our buns on Sunday (no way to do it sooner) and I would like to have the vet look into it as soon as possible, does anyone have any suggestions as to what I could ask her to look into?
Thanks
