Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

Heart problems

Trebor was diagnosed with dilated cardiomyopathy in September. We took him in as he was scuffing his toes ? & the vet picked up a grade 5 heart murmur :( he had ecg and scans and was put on fortekor and vetmedin.

I'm not sure if I'm just been paranoid due to losing Dora so suddenly but his respiratory rate seems really fast this evening. When i went to check on him earlier this evening he was lying down with his neck outstretched and his head up (really weird position)

I'm quite concerned & considering calling a vet. I'm just worried that they'll think I'm crazy  am I just been paranoid.

I'm really sorry to hear about Trebor :( But I am glad you have a vet who was sufficiently on the ball to diagnose DC.

I don't think you're being paranoid at all. DC is well managed by drug therapy, but the dosages have to be right for the animal. They won't think you're crazy if you call, personally I think it's important that you do.

As well as possibly adjusting the dosage, he can be given furosemide - a diuretic - which should greatly ease his breathing. Has he been prescribed that before?

Let me know how he goes xx Good luck and take care xx

I dont think your Vet will consider you to be paranoid at all. It may be that Trebor now has some fluid build up in his chest due to his DCM and if so this would mean that his lungs cannot function as efficiently. So he would have an increased respiratory rate/effort. If he does have some pulmonary oedema then a diuretic drug such as Frusemide would help.

The doses of Trebor's other meds may also need to be reviewed/altered. This is often the case with DCM.

IME the benefits of Frusemide are seen very quickly when being used for treating pulmonary oedema secondary to heart disease.

Out of interest is Trebor a REW/New Zealand White ?

How is Trebor this morning? I've been worried about you both!

Spoke to our specialist vet today and she suggested possibly starting him on frusemide :) she wants to check him over first so we are going to see her tomorrow.

She did say I could get one of the vets nearer to check him and the could speak with her if that was easier but I explained about Dora & that i would rather just wait and see her as she thought he would be fine tomorrow and advised me to call back if I got anymore concerned.

Trebor is a crossbreed as far as I am aware so unsure what he is crossed with.
One of the vets says he's albino ? Is that the same as REW ? xx

I'm so glad you're getting Trebor seen and discussing the furosemide. Good thing :)

Yes REW is albino :D

Thanks for your PM. I shall reply soon - please keep me posted! x

Yes, the reason I asked is because it fits with some research I am doing about the breed type predisposition to Heart Disease. I am glad that your Vet is clearly very on the ball re treatment options. She may suggest that Trebor has a blood profile run before starting him on the Frusemide. As I mentioned in my previous post, the benefits of Frusemide are usually seen very quickly once treatment is initiated.

Sending lots of vibes xx

Thanks guys for your advice and vibes.

That's Mr T home :D

he was admitted this afternoon for oxygen therapy and supportive care & has responded well so the vet has let me have him home this evening :D

He's a bit spaced out/sleepy just now but he has had a few doses of vetergesic whilst at the vets so hoping he's more chirpy tomorrow.

They've started him on frusemide but not took any bloods atm. Any ideas what they would be checking for on the bloods ? I meant to ask the nurse that discharged him but totally forgot, was just happy to get him home xx

The big man. Feeling totally sorry for himself :(

He is absolutely gorgeous

Bloods may be useful to determine the state of liver and kidneys.

Particularly kidneys which can be affected by those heart drugs he's on, and also by furosemide.

He is just beautiful and I can see why you love him so much. He's so brave xx

What a gorgeous rabbit  Sending loads of vibes for him. I hope he feels a lot better tomorrow.

He's a very handsome man & he knows it

I frequently am woken up by this lovely face if I dare to try have a long lie

We have to go back & see the vet again in a week. So will ask then about bloods etc

I've just remembered that he's also been sent home with vetergesic so probably won't be any more chirpy tomorrow :( Poor guy.

i love this guy a lot. We actually adopted him for our pepper who was my bestest friend I miss her very much. As does Trebor, I like to tell myself his lopped ear is a tribute to pepper  as he had always been an up eared bunny until we lost her...

That is indeed a very lovely face to wake up to

And I am delighted to see his little pink lips, given his heart condition :D

Poor lad does look rather down in the dumps  The blood test would be to see how his kidneys and liver are functioning. Drug dosing is usually dependent on this. Did the Vet say why Vetergesic has been prescribed ?

I hope that Trebor is feeling brighter today x

I hope Trebor is doing well today :D

OH has walked by and studied that beautiful face and done a few eulogies over him

He's doing a lot better today :)

Hmm...I will ask about bloods at our next appointment. I assume they didn't do bloods to avoid stressing him out more?

Unsure why they've kept him on the vetergesic but when they were admitting him he mentioned giving him some as he thought he may be quite sore & he said it was a tranquilliser too as he's quite a stressy rabbit...

I found some uneaten poop early hours this morning. Looked like caecotrophs but hard ? & kinda greasy...
I've not found anymore but if i do I may call the vet

Awww sweet boy

It can be very difficult to take blood from a rabbit. His his case, his blood pressure will have been lowered by the drugs he's on and so that would make it even more tricky. It can be stressful if they can't get the blood straight away.

Truth is, he needs the drugs and I am sure they will give him the lowest dose he can do well on, so it's a catch 22. He needs the drugs whether they have harmful side effects for him or not.

The poops could be due to the vetergesic he's been on. They obviously wanted to keep him as unstressed as possible, especially given his heart condition x

Awkt my poor man :(

I assume if they did take blood & something showed up they may be able to do something to support them?
I'm not sure him or I could take anymore atm tho

I thought the poop might be due to his meds. He's a bit reluctant to go upstairs today normally he's up & down all day  assuming he's dopey from the vetergesic as well. He's currently in the living room with the OH watching tv snuggling with Ari :D

He's such a sweet, well behaved man  our origibun was a stroppy madam sometimes, especially when it came to meds haha. Trebor has been an absolute angel at taking his :D

He's a bunny with a big heart, after all

I think it's a good idea if he takes it easy - from the point of view of his heart and also the vetergesic. You don't want him toppling downstairs, and going up is tough for heart patients ..

I hope things settle down for both his health and your own x
