Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Not eating

Hey it's been a while since I've been on here, not since we lost pepper in 2015.

We lost another bunny (Dora) today.

I can't help but think its all my fault.

This post probably is not in the right place as there is no helping her now as she is sadly gone...

Anyway, Dora had stopped eating today. So we took her to the vets to get checked, she seemed sore before we went to the vets (crunching teeth, reluctant to lie down) when I felt her tummy it seemed hard.

The vet agreed that her stomach felt hard and she was admitted for X-rays. They had to use a little gas so that she would lie still. She seemed to have a mass with gas in it but they could not distinguish what the mass was.

She remained hospitalised with the view to do an exploratory laparotomy. During her short stay her temperature dropped and heat mats etc were implemented to try bring her temperature up. Unfortunately Dora got worse, the vet tried to resuscitate her etc but she's gone

I expected to go and get the usual gut stasis meds and come home with her.

She had also not eaten dinner on Friday but ate breakfast on Saturday & seemed her usual self, maybe if I took her on Saturday she would still be here...

Sorry for the long irrelevant post but I'm just wondering what that mass could have been to make her go downhill quite so fast. Do rabbits get gastric torsions like dogs ?

Oh no, I'm so sorry you lost Dora :(

Did your vet give you an explanation of what he thinks may have happened?

I am very sorry for your loss  It's impossible to say for certain what the 'mass' was, it could have been an obstruction of ingested food. Rabbits can develop a torsion. From what you describe it sounds as though poor Dora had an acute Bloat (gastric dilation) That causes all the symptoms you describe. But that is purely speculation. I very much doubt that you could have done anything more for her.

Many of my bookmarked links about Bloat contain rather graphic images so I wont post them on here. But this link gives a brief account of Acute Bloat and there are no upsetting images on the link

Thanks guys.

I feel absolutely terrible, we never had the same bond as I had with pepper I feel sick now that i realise that I was wrong to expect her to be pepper to me. She was just her. I feel rotten as if i never got to know her properly and now she's gone.

We didn't really get an explanation mighty max. will speak to someone tomorrow about everything.

This sounds exactly like what Dora had Jane. I wish I could have done more for her, I don't think anyone mentioned a blockage been seen on X-ray though. could they have saved her with stomach intubation...

Would you mind pm your other links Jane ? I would like to read all I can so that I can help the bunnies that I still have incase this ever happens again

I will do so now, but they do contain very graphic photos of Post Mortem findings. I did not want to add to your distress by posting the links on here xx

Not really much clarification as they still don't know what was wrong or what happened. Although they did offer post mortem but I declined this as I did not want to do that to the poor little mite, it wasn't going to bring her back.

I will just be using my specialist from now on. I took them to the practice we used to attend as it is closer, Dora was quite poorly and I had no car that day. Our specialist is 45mins away by car. I will not be using them again.

I'm really sorry :(

A specialist is a good idea and I travel several hours for the very best treatment. But it's worth it in the end :)

Yup won't be making same mistake again.
I didn't have a car that day & it would have took me a few hours to get to the specialist on public transport. I'm not sure she would have made it.

Thankfully I have my car back now ! As I'm suffering from bunny paranoia now
