  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Ec blood tests - do low levels mean no ec?

I've had a couple of blood tests done to check for ec on Mr Bubble, who is 11. I got the newer test done and the first time the reading was about 1200 (sorry, can't remember the name of the test). I was told this meant he definitely had ec, and that the levels were very substantial. After treatment, the levels had dropped to 300. Does this mean that he no longer has ec?

Just a bit concerned because he has started peeing where he shouldn't again, and a cataract in his good eye is growing rapidly. We are at the vet again on Tuesday.

My understanding is that you never really get rid of EC and that it can flare up again in times of stress or when the immune system is low.
EC attacks the brain but it also attacks the Kidneys. Have you had any blood tests done to check organ function?

My understanding is that the reduced titre indicates a response to treatment but not that the EC is 'cured'. As rr mentioned, EC remains dormant and can become active again, especially at times of stress/concurrent illness/pain etc

Yes, to my mind, I can't ever see the point of repeat EC testing. It's just not a reliable enough test to check for how active it is.

Thank you all for replying. Bubble had his blood test about a week before Christmas, at the end of his treatment. Vet reckons the ec parasite is now at a more "acceptable" level, and shouldn't be high enough to cause more problems. But Bubs good eye is growing a cataract quickly and he is peeing outside his potty again.

Bub had blood tests done that showed no problem with kidneys, but when another vet phoned the lab to clarify something, she was told the etc would have caused kidney problems.
