when do baby bunnies need water

Hello,

Our new rescue rabbit, Cuddles, has had 7 lovely babies (on day 31 of being with us!). She is being a great Mum and babies are all doing well (and are very cute!).

The hutch has two levels and the sleeping area, where the babies and the cosy nest are, is downstairs. To get upstairs there is a step that cuddles hops onto and then another hop up to the top level. This is going to be too big a hop for little babies, so I'm going to need to make them another way to get upstairs. So wondering how soon they are going to need to go up - for water especially. They are 14 days today and today is the first day they haven't been completely covered in their hay and fur nest/cave.

thanks

I don't know when sadly as I'm drawing a blank. But wouldn't it be easier to provide extra water downstairs to help prevent the kits falling down from upstairs and causing injury?

thanks for reply.

I was wondering about doing that. downstairs has all solid walls and door, so not so easy to hang a bottle - though I could probably find a way of doing it. It also has deep hay everywhere to keep everyone warm, so wouldn't be easy to put a dish of water - but if this was the best plan I could do some re-shuffling and find a corner.

It will be quite dark down there, so guessing they are going to want to come upstairs into the light at some point - not sure when?

They'll be ok until they start hoping about and eating solids which will be in about a week, although at that point they'll still be drinking milk too. It's difficult without seeing it but can you convert the steps into a gentle ramp?

Does Cuddles drink from a bottle - if so that's fine for babies they'll copy her - although it would need to be a bit lower than you'd use for an adult. A holder like you use for a bike works - just take a bottle with you to get one that fits and you can screw it to a wall. Or you can diy something with a little screwed in bit of wood to rest on and two screw in eyes to hold the loop.

Thanks for the advice and ideas on hanging a bottle on the wall. I'll have a go at that.

I think I will need to make some sort of ramp for the little ones. the hole between levels is in the corner of the hutch, so I think I might need to do the ramp in two sections so the top if it finishes where the babies can step onto the floor level instead of finishing against a wall - whilst keeping the space big enough for cuddles to get through! I didn't plan this hutch with babies in mind!

Jack's-Jane - those freestanding bottles are a good idea. I might be able to use the way that they hold the bottle to make something similar to go on the wall
