  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Syphlis advise please

Hello and i hope someone can give me any advise if thier bunny has had syphlis.
Last year i put straw in her hutch after reading it was warmer than hay during the winter time.January this year i noticed a scratch just under her eye and as she is allowed out all day i thought she had done it herself. After a while and it not inmproving i took her to the vet to find out it was Syphlis !!
Vet put her on a corse of penecilln G for 4 weeks but this was a bit hap hazzard as the injection has to be took elsewhere and so it was missed and her poops went a bit squashy so it could not be administered then.
All in all it did clear up but not compleatly so now we find ourselves back up the vet for another corse of jabs
Its clearing up well but vet recons 4 is the normal amount of jabs and going over is going to be a bit risky for Pip.
We have moved the hutch to another part of the garden and also bought her a bigger new one as the last hutch had a right littel slug eco system (we did think they slugs were the cause).
We were prescribed Fibreplex for her tummy whist the antibiotics were in, but she did not like the hassle or i at 3 times a day so i found and alternative which is working well.

Now has anyone ever gone down this route? Did the antibiotics cure it compleatly? Did the slugs make the situation worse?
Vets recons this will be an ongoing thing for the rest of her life.
Sorry for the long winded thread but i hope this may help someone else.

Hi Carole

Your vet is certainly administering the correct treatment for syphilis: 4-6 repeats at intervals of 5 to 7 days, is the treatment of choice against rabbit syphilis.

I don't know why there is a risk for Pip, it's extremely safe when injected? It's also very well tolerated by the gut, so squishy poos aren't always the case.

If the injection was missed last time, then I suggest the course is completed thoroughly this time, and I'm sure your rabbit will be fine. You could print out the link I advised and perhaps show the vet?

No, it shouldn't be ongoing throughout her life.

If you'd like another vet recommendation (I am not suggesting that you do, or that you're not happy with your vet) you can always post another thread here with the header "Rabbit Savvy Vet needed in (your location)" and members will come along and help you with their experiences and recommendations.

Good luck xx

Thank you so much for the reply. We really do love her as she was passed about a bit in one of those small tank type cages and kept in a kitchen. Nice hutch and run now :)Glad to know that it will clear up, also thank you for the link.
Regards Carole
