  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

I don't know what is wrong with my rabbit

I need advice please
My male rabbit is 10 months old , he is neutered ,dutch breed
he was acting a little weird the last few days ,not active as usual and not social ,until yesterday he started grinding his teeth loudly with rising his head up , I was terrified and I rushed him to the vet , she checked his teeth ,his eyes ,the body ,his poop and his ears and she said nothing appears wrong ,she gave me a pain killer and medicine for his stomach circulation to be active ,when we came back home he was refusing to eat so i started to give him food by syringe and I gave him medicine on time , today the grinding is a little bit less but I noticed that the corner of his eye is a bit reddish and his right eye is watery ,and his head is shaking sometimes ,and he is acting weird(jumping around and suddenly stops and become quiet like he wants to sleep )
few hours ago he started eating by his own , he is refusing to eat hay , but he ate the dry food that I was giving him earlier by the syringe ,and also a little bit of apple ,but he is refusing to drink water
I am so confused and worried ,what should I do :(

How good is your vet with rabbits? Rabbits can get stasis, where the guts stops moving normally. Sometimes it happens on it's own and sometimes a side effect of another problem. Either way your bunny needs treatment for that - do you know what drugs he was given? Has he had more painkiller to take home?

It's good he's starting to eat more - offer different foods to see what he wants and all his favourites. He'll probably drink less as he's getting the water from the syringe feeding.

To add to what Tamsin said, what about offering some fresh grass if you have access to it? He might be more inclined to eat that than hay and it has some water content that will help him too. Fresh dandelions might also help if you have any around and a few of his normal vegetables. Herbs are good as they're fragrant and can tempt them to eat again. If you wash them don't shake the water off, leave them wet and put them in a dish - that way he'll take in more water.
If he's been in stasis he'll be dehydrated and may need to be given fluids on a drip. To be honest whatever's going on doesn't sound good and if you can I would personally take him back up the vet as it sounds like a problem that needs treating. If your vet isn't rabbit savvy I'd look around to see if you can find one in your area.
Believe me, I learnt the hard way this weekend not to delay getting to the vet.
I really hope he's okay.

this is only the second time we have been in this vet clinic, the first time was 4 months ago, he had a urinary tract infection, she seemed very good doctor, she immediately diagnosed the infection and gave us the needed medicine and few days later he became fine and totally healthy ,and yesterday was the second time ,yes I am giving him carprofen drops(that's in dutch ,because i live in the Netherlands)wich is the pain killer(i am giving him 1 ml every 12 hours) and Cisaral drops for his GI (0.5 ml every six hours

No need to explain! When your rabbit's ill they should get 100% of your attention. Don't apologise for posting a late update on a forum, your concern right now is him!
I'm so glad to hear he's doing better! Hopefully it'll keep heading in that direction and he'll completely recover from it. Poor little thing.
Sounds lilke he's doing a lot better so I'm sure he'll be fine :)
