Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Scratching ears

Hi;) I've got a new bunny. He's around 9 weeks old. He's a Lionhead rabbit. Yesterday I noticed he was scratching his both ears. It seems like he wants to scratch something out of them. I checked them and there's no swelling, redness, wax, gunk, mites or anything else wrong with them, just normal looking ears. It's heating season in my country so the air is a bit dry I guess, could this be causing him itchiness? He's eating, pooing and peeing normal. Any ideas? Thanks in advance.

My Robin does that ... he's fine also.
Nothing in his ears no marks gunk wax or mites either .

Seems to just be a habit he does in the evening.

How often? Now and then when having a grooming session is normal - they do clean there ears like that, but if he's doing it all the time if could be ear mites.

He's scratching them quite often, but they look normal, no dandruff or anything else, just normal skin. I had to change his food recently. Could this be food allergy or something like that?

If you catch them early mites may not have any visible symptoms. Does he shake his head too?

They are easy to treat - do you have a local vet he could see?
