Sparky and Honey NOT EC!

Some of you may remember that around May time Sparky had a seizure and was pretty much paralysed down one side which he has by and large recovered from.

About 6 weeks ago Honey developed head tilt, her body was folded in half and she was flopping about and spinning in circles. So we commenced treatment for EC and made sure that all the other buns were treated with panacur.

Blood tests for Honey were done a few weeks ago and came back negative for EC and the vet also confirmed that Sparky's blood test was negative for EC.

Turns out there is pus in one of Honey's ears and as such she and Sparky have/had inner ear disease.

Honey is now baytril and we are having to flush her ear with a solution twice a day which she is not impressed with!

Poor babies!
Have you had a culture test done? It might be worth noting that Baytril is weak against anaerobic bacteria so a different antibiotic might be needed.
Hope they start to recover soon.

Poor you Laura!

I agree with Roxy - Baytril is pretty ineffective in these cases.

I really hope you get them sorted. Ear disease isn't at all nice :(

I know that Roxy has recommended the Facebook Group - Help for Headtilt Hoppers as being very helpful and informative

Lots of luck xx

Thanks for the replies

Sparky has pretty much recovered from his episode; because he had a seizure and his limbs went stiff, he can sometimes have difficulty with his balance.

Thanks for the advice on Baytril. Honey has improved an awful lot since we started her on it and coupled with the solution that we are flushing her ear out with, she is much more steady and getting round easier.

Unfortunately OH is the one who has been running her to the vet and I did question him about the baytril but the vet advised that it did the same job as marcobyl (sp?) which sparky had and which required us to crush up two tablets, mix with water and put in a syringe.

The vet is rabbit savvy (Sara at CheshirePet in Holmes Chapel) and Honey is back for a check up on Friday.

You're in good hands there . parsnipbun on here had a Rabbit with an inner ear abscess and his condition was managed with Baytril for a time. As prescribed by a Specialist Vet in Cambridge. So Baytril is certainly not always useless. Sending more vibes for Honey xx

It's always good to get the advice of someone who really knows their stuff, and I'm so glad Honey is doing well! Baytril is an excellent drug with a good safety profile, and obviously the point to begin at. You then have any of the others to move on to if necessary, so I'm delighted it's worked for her!

Yeah we will see what the next check up reveals.

With the marcobyl that we had to give Sparky we had to go out and buy a pestle and mortar just for that.

Things we do for our bun buns.

I have been known to use a razor blade to cut up tablets into specific doses ! I feel like a drug dealer

True :) Hiro was given Marbocyl after his tecabo to clear up any infection that might be remaining. X

Gosh yes, I remember the Marbocyl - my vet went through a phase of using it a lot

So Honey went to the vet today, who is pleased with her progress and said there is a lot less pus in the ear than there was previously.

Th only issue is Honey refuses to move around in the vets so we now have to film her moving around at home and email the footage to the vet.

Silly rabbit.

Good news Laura :D

Honey obviously knows her own mind and knows what she wants :thumb:

Sparky is very handsome with a very glossy coat and Honey is a darling

Thank you! Sparky is part rex so I think thats why his coat is so silky and glossy. It's hilarious when he moults because his undercoat is grey!

The photos were taken before the ear disease kicked in but both are doing well. Sparky is pretty much recovered and Honey last night fully tipped over her food bowl and is now playing with a cardboard tube stuffed with hay. Someone's feeling better!

Honey last night fully

Thank you Laura, that's made my day with that naughty Honey behaving normally again :D

And as for having a grey undercoat - believe me, keeping rabbits all these years has given me one too
