Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

fur loss mystery

dolph

New Kit
We have a rabbit who has lost a lot of fur. He has been treated for mites, ringworm, fungal infection, bacterial infection. Nothing seems to make a difference he's still losing fur. The vet doesn't seem to have any idea.
His urine smells slightly more than usual and he lifts his bottom higher that he used to when urinating. He is eating well and doesn't seem uncomfortable although he has lost a little weight.
This has lasted about 6 weeks now.

Hello

Has the Vet run any diagnostics such as blood tests ? Is your Rabbit neutered and how old is he ?

He's 7.
No blood tests. Did skin scrape which showed nothing.

I would suggest discussing blood tests with the Vet. Diagnostics are detailed in the link in my previous post

Laboratory Tests, Biopsies and Radiography

Blood tests, urine tests, biopsies and radiography may be useful in determining if there is an autoimmune disorder, tumour, internal infection or other hidden cause. This can usually be done quickly with a day stay in hospital, and results are usually back within a few days if samples are sent to an external laboratory.

Welcome to the Forum Dolph

You say your rabbit has lost a lot of fur. Is this all over his body? In one area or in patches here and there?

Has the vet tested his urine (a simple dipstick test) since you mention this ...

Lastly - have you got a very good vet?
