Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

18 days later and Thumper's unwell. Again.

Wise Old Thumper

Back in the utility.

Evidently not responding to the vet's stronger pain relief plus muscle relaxant jabs. I gave her about 10ml of Recovery about 12 noon and just given her about 5ml of tepid water (I say "about" as she dribbled some out of both). There are a couple of teeny tiny droppings so there is kind of output, which is something. But she's really lethargic still. She did show a mild interest in nibbling hay about an hour ago but has now gone back to ignoring it and closed her eyes when I wafted their favourite fragrant herbs under her nose.

She was a bit cool so I got her a heat pad and shut her into the pet carrier with it, some hay and some water for about half an hour but then let her out as I didn't want her to overheat as she can't really escape from the heat pad in there. When she came out, her ears were warmer and don't seem to have cooled off too much at the moment although they're not as warm as Coco's. But of course when under the weather one isn't as warm anyway. She's just so sleepy and disinterested in everything at the moment.

I'll leave her for a while now though in peace, see if the Recovery and water do the trick over time.

But honestly, I can see us going to Vets Now (emergency vet) later on. Again.

Thank you, everyone. It is very frustrating. She did the same this time last year, oddly enough.

With my daughter's help I've just given her another 10ml of Recovery and as her ears are now cold and she's dithering, I've again shut her in the pet carrier with the heat pad (under the padded puppy pad), hay & water. See if that helps. Can't do her any harm unless she gets too hot ...

Oh Angie I'm so sorry to hear this :(

Vibes for Thumper xx

Thank you, MM.

I've just given her another 5ml of Recovery washed down with 5ml of water. Some of both dribbled out but she had the most of both, if you follow.

I never know how much to give and when though and would appreciate guidance please. I really want to avoid the emergency vet if I can.

She has done some droppings, a few tiny ones, a couple of very soft ones that I initially thought were dropped Recovery until I made the mistake of sniffing it ... shan't make that error again  but at least there IS output and her bum's clean. I picked some grass and she ate one but very, very halfheartedly so Coco hoovered those up. And again she very halfheartedly ate a strand of hay. So she knows she needs to eat but just seems reluctant to. And she's still very lethargic really. I was rather hoping she'd have picked up by at least 75% by now, but sadly not. But if she's got an empty belly then she won't, I suppose.

So advice on amounts and how often to feed Recovery please, and plain tepid water too, would be gratefully received because as lovely as the vet is, she's new and Spanish and although she does get 99.9% of what she means across and vice versa, sometimes somethings don't get translated very well if at all. Besides, I forgot to ask her so I don't hold this particular snippet of advice/info against her!

Thank you :)

Poor little bunkin (((gentle nose rubs)))

My vet says "little but often"" why isn't really helpful, but I take it to mean "create a steady output"

xx

Thank you, Beau Belle.

At 7pm I decided that as she was still so lethargic and sleepy she was evidently still in pain, so made the decision and phoned the emergency vet. A few minutes later after having had a discussion with my daughter as to whether she was coming with me or not, I got my bag/purse/insurance certificate together and then went into the utility to catch bunnies ... and stopped in my tracks. Thumper was up on her feet, munching hay as fast as she could get it into her mouth! I couldn't believe it! This wasn't just a "let's taste it" chew, this was an "I'm flippin' starvin', let's get in as much as possible" chew! I left her, went back 5 minutes later, still enthusiastically eating. Rang the vet, said I wasn't coming and why, which they were fine with.

Half an hour later and she's STILL munching away, and in fact an hour later as it is now, and she's still at it! Yaay!

It's taken 11 hours since that first dose of metacam for her to finally feel better. My husband's just come home and I described the way she looked earlier as though she wanted to die. Seriously. She was so, so incredibly sad and dejected, head on the floor, body flattened out. She didn't care. I picked her up and put her on my lap for a cuddle and she never budged and yet she hates that when she's well, so it shows how poorly she was (I did it in an effort to warm her up).

But now she's well and moving and eating and inquisitive and ... normal :) :)

So paws crossed that that's it. For now.

I reckon she's got SAD  as she was like this last year for about 3 or 4 months, as I said earlier, but then was okay for a bit.

She's due for a check-up in the morning - I'd mention SAD to the vet but she's the Spanish one and it'd probably get lost in translation so maybe not this time,.

But I'm happy that she seems to have bounced back all of a sudden, though she has literally given me a headache.

Angie!! I was just about to reply to your previous email, about timings for recovery food etc, and was so pleased to see this :D

I hope the vet is as impressed with her in the morning as you are now. Wonderful news :D

When did she have the pain relief jab? Could her lethargy be from the jab?
I am glad you are keeping her warm.
Recovery food and water is a good call. Especially the water as it keeps them and their digestive system hydrated.

I am glad that Thumper appears to have rallied again. Has the Vet suggested any diagnostics due to Thumper's frequent problems ?

Thank you, everyone :) x

They've done bloods and stuff before, Jane, but nothing shows. Dental she's fine. The one vet even did an xray, which did show a blockage but then after an hour or so after pain relief, it went. We just don't know why, the vet is completely stumped. They have suggested that I take her to a specialist in York when she's ill but to be honest I think the journey would finish them both off as it's over an hour away and then to be poked and prodded and goodness knows what, I doubt she'd come back, so I'm very reluctant to do that although of course I want to get to the bottom of this in an effort to put an end to it. Our vet has rang the specialist in York, explained, I *think* she's sent the records over, but they're stumped too (which is why they want to see her). She is a complete mystery. She would be - she's ours. We couldn't have got 2 normal rabbits could we? Oh no, one had to be strange .

Went to the vet this morning for a check up and happily she's put some weight back on. 18 days ago she was 2.6kg. Yesterday she'd dropped to 2.36, but this morning she'd gone up to 2.45 so the vet was really happy with that, so was I of course.

They were very upset when we got back home so to help calm them I let them into the garden for a bounce about for half an hour and then they were more than happy to hop back into the utility of their own accord after. Well, Thumper did. Coco's too fat to jump up the step (she is, but I'm working on that) so I had to catch her and throw her in . Coco was sulking then as she wanted to go back outside in the shed, but the vet agreed that they could go back out tomorrow. One more day indoors given that Thumper was so ill yesterday, is recommended.

They're both fine now, eating happily. Though I am about to upset them as I need to put the tumbler on as it's raining and my daughter's school skirt needs drying. She's currently wearing one I had to dig out of the to-be-washed pile as I didn't get around to washing them the weekend! Luckily it doesn't look dirty! Bad mother of the week award goes to ... me! oops

What a mystery Thumper is !! Hopefully she will remain well for as long as possible after her latest 'episode'.

I'm glad to hear she's put some weight on :thumb:

Yes, I really wish they weren't so mysterious with their illnesses  Even with the aid of FHB's wonderful knowledge, there are things we still can't fathom!
