  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Help with syringe

Brad-14

New Kit
I have a 16 week old male lion-head lop who has had a bit of a snotty nose.

I took him to the vets the other day and they have give me antibiotics to give him for 10 days.

However he will not let me give him them and i'm having to hold him still with the help of my partner but it is really stressing him out and i'm worried he will hate me for it as i haven't had him long (5 weeks)

It's in liquid form and i have to give him it twice a day so i was just wondering if there was any other way i could try giving him it, Maybe in his water or something?

You can try putting it into a little baby food (Ellas Kitchen baby food is recommended). Try the food plain with him first to check he likes it, if he does then mix the medicine in.

It depends on the antibiotic but some people mix a little with some Ella's kitchen baby food - vegetable flavour such as carrot, and the rabbit eats it by itself. If it's baytril it tastes vile. I once tasted some by accident whilst trying to syringe it into my lizard

You've probably been given Baytril, and it tastes really awful!

Please don't put it in the water - he'll never drink it and so won't get the recommended dose.

I should have a look at videos on YouTube for ideas on holding and syringing, for example:

You can also mix the Baytril with a bit of organic baby food. Carrots, apples and bananas are good choices to take away the nasty taste of the antibiotic. Ella's Kitchen is a good brand that I've used :thumb:

I hope that helps you a bit :D

Best way I found is to wrap him in a town and pop the syringe in to the side of his mouth and go really slow .

One of the meds my boy was on tasted horrible but one he lapped up

Ok thanks a lot for the reply's guy's. I think i will go and buy some of the Ella's baby food and do it that way, Hopefully will have more success with this method and we had another wrestling match this morning,

Also i have to say i'm quiet surprised by how strong rabbits actually are. He doesn't take it lieing down lets put it that way!
