Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

English lop with swollen ear flap.

Has anyone had any experiance with a swollen ear on a lop ? One of his ear flaps has swelled up with clear liuid (odema/edema). He had surgery last friday and had his front leg amputated, been in and out of vets ever since. Vet is baffled as to what it can be. He is on loxicom and has cold compresses on the ear every few hours but it's getting worse.

Sorry - I've no experience of this with rabbits although I have with dogs.
I'd discuss with my vets draining the fluid & sending it to the lab for a culture in case there is an infection hidden there.

Was it a full leg amputation or did they leave a stump?

I'm really sorry to hear both you and your bun are having a difficult time at the moment. I don't have any advice or experience I can share with you but just wanted to send some vibes.

Daphnephoebe's suggestion of discussing draining the fluid with your vet for a culture sounds like a very sensible option - after all, it doesn't hurt to ask! :)

I'm sorry I've no experience either, but I'm wondering if it has anything to do with an i.v. line that was put in the ear. Do you know whether this is the same ear that was used for a drip during his operation? Sending a sample of the fluid off for culture would be a good idea, although I would have thought that the liquid would not be clear if there was an infection. Oedema happens after surgery sometimes, but usually close to the operation site or close to where there has been trauma to the tissue.

Sending vibes for him.

I just thought, it's also worth getting your vet or a vet nurse to show you how to massage and disperse the fluid. Just compress alone won't help the fluid if it is caused by a drip as it'll have no where to go.
Gentle massage from tip of ear to base can encourage the fluid to disperse into other areas of the body.

Thanks for the suggestions guy's. I have just dropped Ernie back off at the vets and he is being hospitalised. The vets did use that ear for the operation! . Up until this morning I was able to hold the ear upright and drain the fluid out. I did massage it dut it just stayed in a big pocket above the stitches from the leg amputation. Vet has been on the phone to a specialist in Edinburgh and they have decided to monitor him tonight and if no better by tomorrow she will create a drainage hole !!!. Vets have used a lampshade collar because he has started to chew the ear. Vet insists that he must have banged or stood on his ear ! This is definitely not the case, his ear was slightly hot and swollen when Icollected him after his op. The vet said it was probably due to the anasthetic.

Welcome

Yes I guessed it must have been where the IV line was put in. The most likely explanation :)

I'm surprised your vet didn't also suggest that explanation, and not accept it? It's one of those things ...

I really hope you get this issue sorted. It's enough your little one has been through and he needs full support all round.
As do you
