  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Rabbit has eaten plum branches and leaves- will he be okay?

He's eaten them before and for some reason I thought they were safe to eat. He's had 2 small branches today and he seems alright - is it okay to just monitor him and be mindful of any changes in behaviour, or should I take him to the vets straight away? Because he's had them before I'm hoping the former is good enough.

I've had mine eat cherry tree leaves & branches.
Personally I'd keep a close eye on him for changes in behaviour etc I imagine he'd be fine, but if you're worried maybe call your vets for advice on what they'd suggest.

I agree. My very first Rabbits ate plum tree leaves, twigs and the actual plums and never came to any harm at all. At the time I had no idea that plum tree leaves etc were potentially toxic to Rabbits.

Frances Harcourt-Brown, a now retired Rabbit Specialist Vet, is apparently of the opinion that Rabbits seldom have problems with many supposedly toxic plants/leaves.

He will be fine

I have a plum tree hanging over from next door's garden and I can't stop the buns from getting at the leaves and fruit ... It's never harmed them :D
