Found a snake egg

William

Wise Old Thumper
My dad found a snake egg while digging up an area of the backyard so I'm incubating it now :D

It's weird, that area of the yard is where snakes like to lay their eggs apparently because me and my brother found about a dozen snake eggs in that area once when we were doing an easter egg hunt. Not sure what species they were but they were bigger and more oblong than this egg if I remember correctly.

Not sure what species this one is either but I'm thinking maybe a southern black racer since we've got so many of those in our yard. I wonder why there's only one egg though :? I guessing probably the snake wasn't finished laying.

It'll be interesting to see what hatches out anyway! We'll have to dig in that area more carefully now in case we run across more eggs!

I'm also currently incubating anole (lizard) eggs. I've hatched 3 so far this summer and currently have 5 more eggs. After my first hatched I went looking for more and within 10 minutes I found two in the veggie garden patch and then a few minutes later I was watering the mulberry tree and saw an egg sticking out of the soil! Then later on I found 4 eggs in a little plant pot and a couple of eggshells from ones that had already hatched. Really surprised to find that many in one little pot!

Here's my last hatchlings, they actually hatched on the same day so I was attempting to get them to sit side by side on my arm for pictures but one jumped off and I was pressed for time so he just got his pics taken on the ground  The other one chilled on my arm before I had to regretfully put him on a tree and say goodbye  (I was running late for work).

Before they hatched (still waiting on the smallest egg to hatch)

And then the 4 eggs that I found in the plant pot, with 1 of the dried up eggshell from one that had already hatched

I'm pretty obsessed with eggs and hatching things as you can see

Well I was thinking it might be a southern black racer simply because we have so many of them so odds are greater, but after looking at pictures of their eggs online I have no idea. Every picture seems to have different looking eggs even though they're all supposed to be racer eggs and I haven't found any with a scale to see how big they are either, although I was guessing their eggs would be about this size just based on the size of the snake.

So it's even more exciting than the anole eggs cause with the anoles there's only 2 species they could be - green anole or brown anole. But there's no telling with this! It could even be a venomous snake! I've also never hatched a snake egg so this is a new experience!

That alone would have me putting that sucker right back where I found it...or perhaps somewhere very far away from me!

I was surprised to see the anoles were brown...didn't know they came in that color. I've only seen the green ones. (My son was fascinated with them as a youth.)

Good luck to you, I hope it turns out alright. :)

It can't be put back since we're putting the pool in that spot! But if it turns out to be a venomous snake I'll be letting the hatchling go in a nice wooded area, miles away from my yard

That would actually be unlikely though considering the coral snake is the only venomous snake in florida that lays eggs, the others give birth. Not that I couldn't have coral snakes in my yard (they're secretive and live underground, under wood etc most of the time so I probably wouldn't know if I had them) but chances are it's one of the nonvenomous ones.

It could also be a glass lizard egg, we've got some of them in our yard and the egg appears to be about the right size for them, from what I can tell from pictures.

In the morning I'm going to check the area out and see if the snake has laid anymore overnight (my dad found the egg around dusk). That'd also give a clue to what species because it'd have to be a nocturnal snake then, assuming my dad would have found any eggs that were currently in the dug out spot. I'm guessing this egg was probably just laid in the last day or two because dad has been digging on that area for a week or so and then hasn't dug anymore on it in the past 2 days and the snake probably found the loose soil enticing for its nest.

Yeah there's a lot of species of anoles, we've got a good healthy population of green anoles in our yard too but sadly many areas of Florida don't :( The green in some areas are being eaten/pushed out by nonnative species. I'm glad our yard seems to be a nice safe haven for them. Hopefully I'll hatch a green soon:D
