Rabbit Savvy vet needed urgently in Southampton/Hampshire/England

Warren Veteran
Hello everyone,

My Charlie has a middle ear infection and has a small abscess at the base of his ear. Treatment prescribed by my usual vet today is:
- Xray and blood sample
- Antibiotics
- 2 x ear flush
- Metacam
- Anti-sickness meds

If no better then will be removed surgically by practice owner who is more experienced. I have been warned about the complications of head tilt.

Thanks everyone, Lucy x

P.s Charlie saw vet on Friday and didn't pick up any of the symptons said it come up over night today

I believe John Chitty at Anton Vets in Andover is well recommended on here ( he was on the webinar on Monday)
Its a bit of a trip for you, hopefully someone else can recommend something nearer

I'd second that. I live in Havant but my Bridge bun Cherry was referred to him after she broke her leg. Sadly, I did have to have her put to sleep and am still paying off the bill at £10 a month - it was over £2500 - but John was amazing and did everything he could for her. I wish I lived nearer as the staff there are all lovely and the bunny accommodation is spacious and they encourage bonded buns to stay together.

Yes John Chitty is your local specialist vet.

Are you sure that your bun was given anti-sickness meds? If so I really wouldn't trust your vet, rabbits are unable to vomit they literally don't have that reflex and can't do it and as such anti-sickness meds would not be appropriate! Unless of course they are performing a secondary function. (Like metacam is both an anti-inflammatory and a pain reliever)

I have known anti sickness meds being prescribed Hele. It's a bit controversial as you know ...

The use of anti-nausea drugs is controversial, as there is no clear evidence that rabbits experience feelings of nausea. They have a different physiology than humans in that they physically do not have the capacity to vomit, so we do not know if motion sickness plays a role in rabbits with vestibular disease, and there is no substantiated evidence that the use of anti-nausea drugs helps improve the condition of rabbits with head tilt. Although there is probably no harm (although this has not been examined, either), these drugs are probably not necessary and it might be best to avoid too many pharmaceuticals given to the rabbit at one time. Some veterinarians feel anti-nausea drugs, like diphenhydramine or meclizine, are useful in the rolling rabbit or one who is not eating.

Good luck with John Chitty. I add my name to the list singing his praises!

Yes he has been prescribed metoclopramide for anti sickness. He doesn't seem to spin or roll around so im going to get him to stop taking it.

The abscess was actually on the outside of his ear and wasn't an inner ear infection which the xray confirmed. The abscess has gone down already thankfully

My mums rabbit has went in for a standard dental and one of his molars have fractured. He now has an abscess and the vets do not want to pull it out. I've told her that you recommended john chitty. I wll go john if need be too. Thanks every bun
