  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

New Kit
Any advice would be great full !
We have two female rabbits, unfortunately we went out one morning to clean the cage and the latch must of been loose and they were gone !
Luckily they were still living under our shed, though time we managed to catch them around a week apart from each other.
around a week later again we went to clean the hutch and found two lots of kits ! So we assumed they had bred with a wild male,
The kits were doing great, little fat bellies ,we think they were around 3-4 weeks old,up until a week ago, when each day one or two would die, sadly the last two died this morning, and also we have lost one of the mothers,
what could have caused this ?
Could it be fighting ?
We are stumped and of course sad
Thanks

I am very sorry  Without a Post Mortem examination it's impossible to say what may have caused the losses. But the possibility of RHD/RHD2 cannot be ignored. Kits under 4 weeks of age are usually unaffected by RHD/RHD2, but after that they become increasingly susceptible.

Again, I am very sorry for your losses

Could they have caught a disease of the wild rabbits? So sorry to hear of your losses :( xx

Yes this is certainly possible. It could also have been the stress and shock of it all as well.

I'm so sorry for your losses. Please stay around if you wish, you are welcome here

may I ask whereabouts you are? certain areas of the country appear to be suffering more with outbreaks of disease than others and this would be helpful to know. (a region or nearest large town)

I am so sorry for your loss. A disease seems most likely.

Hi all, thanks for your replies,
Just to answer some of your questions !
No I don't think our rabbits were vaccinated, a freind gave us them.
I live in a village in south Lanarkshire, Scotland,
I assumed it was some sort of desease as there was no sign of trauma to the bodies, they seemed fine one minute then they would get lethargic and fall on their sides, acting dizzy and it almost looked like they were having a fit ?
When I checked on the remaining two last night they were running around fine, what ever it is it acts super quick !
The other mother seems fine ?!
Thank you for your replies and condolences, my daughter is very upset so giving her an answer would make things a bit better for her !
